Disney Is Finally Making the Nicolas Cage Sequel We’ve Been Waiting 18 Years For

As a die-hard film fan, I’m thrilled to hear whispers that Disney might revive one of Nicolas Cage‘s iconic action franchises with a fresh sequel after nearly two decades! For years, Cage has been a constant presence in the silver screen, leaving his mark on classics like Face/Off, Con Air, and more recently, the 2024 smash hit Longlegs. If this gossip is true, it seems we’ll be adding another chapter to his most cherished film series yet!

It’s been hinted that Disney has begun creating “National Treasure 3”, following the adventures of Nicholas Cage’s character, Benjamin Franklin Gates, who initially stole the Declaration of Independence in 2004. The original film and its sequel, “National Treasure: Book of Secrets” (released in 2007), have been beloved by fans for years, and now it appears that Disney is responding to their requests for a third installment.

Based on information from insider Daniel Richtman, it appears that a new installment of “National Treasure” is being considered. Chris Bremner, renowned for his work on the last two “Bad Boys” films, has been linked as the screenwriter for this project. He was responsible for penning the scripts for “Bad Boys for Life” in 2020 and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” scheduled for release in 2024.

After Disney unveiled a 10-episode spin-off series called “National Treasure: Edge of History” in December 2022, it featured Lisette Olivera, Zuri Reed, Antonio Cipriano, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as its main characters. The series also reprised the roles of Justin Bartha’s Riley Poole and Harvey Keitel’s Peter Sadusky, thus aligning with the storyline of the initial films.

In the films “National Treasure” and “National Treasure: Book of Secrets,” character Nicolas Cage plays Benjamin Franklin Gates, an American historian and treasure hunter, who chases after hidden fortunes connected to national history and his family lineage. Alongside Justin Bartha, Diane Kruger, and Jon Voight, the first movie has Gates discovering a treasure map on the reverse of the Declaration of Independence. In the second installment, allegations against Gates’ ancestor as a participant in Abraham Lincoln’s assassination arise, prompting him to hunt for the lost page from John Wilkes Booth’s diary to clear his family’s name. Both movies are available for streaming on Disney+.

How Could National Treasure 3 Come Together?

In light of the fact that Cage last played Ben Gates a while back, Disney has numerous possibilities for where the narrative could progress in a third National Treasure film. Yet, as per screenwriter Ted Elliott (on the National Treasure Hunt podcast), the upcoming Disney+ series is expected to exert some influence on the plot of the sequel.

Edge of History series for another season. However, those characters might reappear in Benjamin Gates’ upcoming treasure hunt, as they could be part of his well-known team.

Reflecting on previous plotlines, fans are eager to uncover the enigma surrounding page 47 from the President’s Secret Book in the second film, which was hinted at but left unexplained due to its supposedly significant and life-changing consequences. This could serve as a compelling starting point for a third movie, where character Ben Gates might have been pursuing answers to that mystery since then.

Ben and his spouse, Abigail, might potentially expand their family, introducing new members who could immerse themselves in the same traditions and background as their ancestors. In Edge of History, Bartha’s character Riley Poole hinted at their marriage and dog ownership, but there was no mention of them having children.

Currently, fans are eagerly awaiting official updates regarding the release timeline for the movie, which might not be until at least 2026, possibly even 2027 or beyond. The excitement is growing as we look forward to seeing Nicolas Cage reprise one of his most memorable roles on the big screen once again.
