Tom Hiddleston revealed that Jack Nicholson’s performance as the Joker in the 1989 film Batman was a major influence on how he played Loki in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Tom Hiddleston recently shared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he likely wouldn’t have taken on the role of Loki if he hadn’t seen Jack Nicholson’s performance as the Joker. He explained that Nicholson’s portrayal had a huge impact on his imagination when he first saw it. Hiddleston was struck by how much fun Nicholson seemed to be having as the villain, and how charismatic, creative, and uninhibited the character was.

Hiddleston revealed he intentionally kept Jack Nicholson’s acting style in mind while filming the first Thor movie. He and director Kenneth Branagh tried out various approaches during filming, with Hiddleston particularly enjoying imitating Nicholson – he described it as the most fun he had on set. This experimentation helped shape Loki into the complex and captivating character audiences saw on screen.

In a 2013 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hiddleston mentioned Jack Nicholson’s portrayal of the Joker as a major influence, alongside other iconic villains he admired growing up. He expressed deep respect for Nicholson’s performance in Tim Burton’s Batman, as well as Alan Rickman in Die Hard and James Mason in North by Northwest.

Hiddleston explained that while filming Thor, he and the director, Kenneth Branagh, explored different approaches to Loki’s character. They tried portraying him in the style of actors Peter O’Toole and Clint Eastwood, each bringing out different emotional nuances. This experimentation gave Branagh a variety of options during editing, helping him create Loki’s complicated personality.

Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as Loki in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. Fans last saw Loki in Season 2 of his Disney+ series, where he evolved into the God of Time.
