Agatha Christie is a hugely popular and incredibly productive crime writer, often called the Queen of Crime. Many of her books have been turned into plays, radio shows, TV series, and movies. While stories like And Then There Were None and Murder on the Orient Express are famous and have been adapted many times, a new mystery miniseries chose to focus on one of her less well-known novels: The Seven Dials Mystery.
Published in 1929, The Seven Dials Mystery features characters Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent and Superintendent Battle, who first appeared in Agatha Christie’s 1925 novel, The Secret of Chimneys. However, the recent three-part miniseries, Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, takes some liberties with the original story, altering the characters’ backgrounds and other plot details.
Bundle and Battle Worked Together Before Seven Dials
Bundle and Battle have a history. They first encountered each other in the novel The Secret of Chimneys, where they jointly investigated a murder at Chimneys. However, the Netflix series Seven Dials presents their meeting differently – Bundle is unaware that Battle is a Scotland Yard Superintendent when they first meet.
In The Secret of Chimneys, readers first meet characters like George Lomax and Bill Eversleigh, who reappear in The Seven Dials Mystery. The story begins with George Lomax persuading Bundle’s father to throw a party, but tragedy strikes when one of the guests is murdered. Superintendent Battle leads the investigation, and Bundle offers assistance wherever she can.
Bundle’s Mother Is Dead in the Book and Bundle Doesn’t Have a Brother
Helena Bonham Carter portrays Lady Caterham, Bundle’s mother, in the new adaptation. Interestingly, in the original novel, The Seven Dials Mystery, Bundle’s mother is deceased, and she lives with her father, Lord Caterham. The story also doesn’t include a brother for Bundle; in fact, she jokes about her mother wishing she’d had sons.
The TV adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials changed the story by killing off Bundle’s father, making his death a key part of the plot. The series also added a new character – Bundle’s brother, who died in the war – to give his mother, Lady Caterham, a stronger reason for her behavior and explain the altered family background.
Bundle Didn’t Have a Relationship with Gerry Wade
As a huge Agatha Christie fan, I was really surprised by how they developed the relationship between Bundle and Gerry Wade in the new series! They actually showed this really sweet, intimate moment between them at a party where Gerry even hinted he was thinking of proposing. It was such a departure from the book, where Bundle and Gerry barely knew each other – they’d only met once! It definitely added a new layer to the story, and I was fascinated by it.
Bundle starts investigating simply because she’s curious and wants a bit of excitement. Her interest is sparked when she discovers a letter Gerry was writing – it mentions a place called Seven Dials. After nearly hitting Ronny Deveraux with her car following a shooting, and hearing him mention Seven Dials too, Bundle decides to look into it further.
Bundle and Her Mother Aren’t in Chimneys When Gerry Dies
The story Seven Dials by Agatha Christie begins with Bundle and her mother, Lady Caterham, at a party held at Chimneys. The hosts, the wealthy Cootes, are renting the property from Lady Caterham. However, unlike the original novel, Bundle and Lady Caterham are not present at Chimneys when Gerry Wade dies.
Sir Oswald and Lady Coote rent Chimneys, a large estate, and invite a group of young friends to stay. However, the visit takes a dark turn when Gerry Wade unexpectedly dies. The circumstances are unusual – some of his friends had played a prank on him earlier that night, filling his bedroom with eight alarm clocks.
The following morning, Gerry was found dead, with seven of the eight alarm clocks carefully positioned. Bundle later discovered this arrangement was a warning from the Seven Dials to the killer, not an indication that they were responsible for Gerry’s death. Bundle and Lord Caterham arrived at Chimneys after Mr. and Mrs. Cootes had left, meaning they weren’t present when Gerry died.
Loraine Doesn’t Escape with the Formula
Bundle overhears a dangerous plan by a group called the Seven Dials to steal a formula from a scientist named Eberhard. She then attempts to get invited to a party hosted by George Lomax, hoping to find the scientist and investigate, and Bill and Jimmy join her to help with the investigation.
After Jimmy Thesiger is shot, his half-sister, Loraine, arrives at George Lomax’s house. Jimmy says he was attacked in the library and shot during the struggle. However, the situation changes when Loraine unexpectedly steals the formula and flees, escaping from Lomax’s estate and heading to the train station.
In The Seven Dials Mystery, Loraine receives a package containing a crucial formula, but is discovered by Superintendent Battle before she can escape. She claims she doesn’t know what’s inside and that the package just fell from a window. The truth is, Jimmy staged a fight, tossed the formula to Loraine through the window, and then shot himself.
Superintendent Battle figured out Jimmy was part of the theft plot when he discovered a glove with teeth marks on it. Though the glove didn’t fit Jimmy, it provided crucial evidence. Jimmy had used the glove to fire the gun without leaving fingerprints, and after shooting himself in the arm, he removed the glove using his teeth.
There’s No Confrontation on the Train Between Bundle and the Criminals
Because Loraine doesn’t manage to steal the formula, there’s no pursuit or showdown. Instead of a confrontation on the train, Bundle, Bill, Loraine, and Jimmy continue working together on the case. Eventually, Bill visits Jimmy’s house, saying he has discovered new details about the scheme and Gerry’s death.
Following a conversation between Bill and Jimmy, Jimmy contacts Bundle and asks her and Loraine to meet him at the Seven Dials club. Jimmy arrives with Bill, though Bill remains in the car. Jimmy instructs Loraine to bring Bill inside, only to discover he’s unconscious. They manage to carry Bill into the club, but that’s when the situation takes an unexpected turn.
Jimmy attacked Bundle from behind, knocking her unconscious. When she woke up, she heard Bill calling her name. Bill explained that Jimmy and Loraine had been working together the whole time, and Jimmy had even tried to poison Bill. Luckily, Bill had figured out Jimmy was involved and pretended to drink the poison to expose him.
Bill Eversleigh Is a Member of the Seven Dials
In the Netflix adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, the character Bill Eversleigh has a less prominent role than in the original book. In Christie’s story, Bill reveals his connection to the secret Seven Dials organization and explains that Jimmy and Loraine developed the formula before coming to the club. Ultimately, the Seven Dials are successful in capturing Jimmy and Loraine.
I was shocked to discover that Gerry Wade and Ronny Deveraux were also involved with the mysterious Seven Dials, and even more horrified to learn they’d fallen victim to Jimmy and Loraine’s scheme. It was a real twist when I found out Superintendent Battle was one of them too! Then, unbelievably, they offered me a place in the Seven Dials, filling the spot left vacant by Gerry Wade’s death. It was a chilling invitation, to say the least.
Bundle’s Family Isn’t Involved in the Case in Any Way
In Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials, one of the most significant changes from the source material is the backstory given to Bundle’s family and how it connects to the central mystery. The Netflix adaptation reveals that Bundle’s father died while working on a mission for the Seven Dials, a clandestine group dedicated to protecting the nation.
I was totally shocked to find out that Bundle’s mother, Lady Caterham, was actually the one pulling the strings behind the formula theft! It’s a huge twist because in the original story, she’s already gone – she doesn’t have anything to do with the crime, and Bundle’s dad isn’t involved with the Seven Dials either. Only Bill Eversleigh is part of that group in the book!
Bill and Bundle Get Engaged in the End
The miniseries adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Seven Dials portrays Bundle with a more developed romantic life than the original book. In the show, she’s on the verge of getting engaged to Gerry Wade before he’s murdered. However, the novel doesn’t establish Bundle in a committed relationship at the start; instead, a connection blossoms between her and Bill Eversleigh as they work on the case together.
Once Jimmy attacks Bundle and she recovers, Bill reveals his feelings for her, and she feels the same way. Their moment is interrupted by the arrival of the Seven Dials, who are followed by Superintendent Battle’s explanation of how Jimmy and Loraine were caught. Ultimately, Bundle and Bill become engaged, and Lord Caterham approves of their relationship.
