Whether you love them or hate them, the Star Wars prequels didn’t convincingly show how Anakin Skywalker became Darth Vader. The movies rushed his transformation, portraying him as a frustratingly whiny child, teenager, and adult, ultimately leading to a shocking and unearned decision to commit terrible acts.
One of the biggest weaknesses of the Star Wars prequels was actually turned into a strength by George Lucas, Dave Filoni, and the team behind Star Wars: The Clone Wars. They used the animated series to develop Anakin Skywalker’s story much further. The seven-season cartoon not only explained the events that led to his fall to the dark side, but also gave Anakin a more complex personality, making Darth Vader’s portrayal in the original trilogy feel more consistent with his earlier life.
Anakin’s Turn In The Clone Wars Was Slow And Steady
The movies show Anakin Skywalker’s turn to the dark side as a sudden event, but the animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars explores the gradual breakdown of his mental state that ultimately leads to him becoming Darth Vader. A key early example of this is in Season 2, Episode 8, “Brain Invaders,” where Anakin resorts to torture—interrogating and harming Poggle the Lesser, a Geonosian resistant to Jedi mind control—in order to get the information he wants.
The show introduces Ahsoka as Anakin’s apprentice, and their bond becomes just as significant to him as his romance with Padme Amidala. Anakin sees Ahsoka as the sister he always wanted, providing a sense of family that the Jedi Order denied him. Therefore, he’s heartbroken when Ahsoka leaves the Jedi after being wrongly accused of a crime.
The Jedi Council’s handling of Anakin’s apprentice strengthened his feeling that the Jedi Order was flawed. This made him more susceptible to Palpatine’s influence and ultimately led him to abandon the Jedi.
Anakin Was Purposely Played Different In Clone Wars
When Matt Lanter was chosen to voice Anakin Skywalker in The Clone Wars, George Lucas and Dave Filoni talked about how to approach the character. They decided to differentiate him from his portrayal in the films, aiming for a more adventurous, classic hero vibe, but with hints of a troubled side.
Lanter truly immersed himself in the role, and over seven seasons, he gave fans a more complete and nuanced portrayal of the character who would eventually become Darth Vader. Hayden Christensen himself appreciates Lanter’s work, stating it even impacted his performance as Anakin and Darth Vader in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
