Fans of the critically acclaimed film Midsommar, featuring a standout performance by Florence Pugh, have less than two weeks to watch it on HBO Max. The movie is scheduled to be removed from the streaming service on January 31st.
I was completely gripped by Ari Aster’s film. It centers around Dani and Christian, a couple already struggling, who face an unimaginable tragedy when Dani’s sister and parents die. Christian invites Dani to Sweden with his friends – Mark, Josh, and Pelle, a Swedish local – to attend a midsummer festival. What starts as an attempt to escape grief quickly turns into a life-altering journey for Dani, and honestly, it’s a film that really stays with you.
Released in 2019, Midsommar proved to be a significant success, earning over $48 million in theaters despite costing only $9 million to make. The film also received widespread recognition, including seven awards such as Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Wide Release at the 2020 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards.
Currently, the movie Midsommar has an 83% “Certified Fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on over 400 reviews from critics. However, general audiences haven’t been as enthusiastic, giving it a score of 63% on the site’s “Popcornmeter” after more than 5,000 reviews.
What’s Next for Midsommar Star Florence Pugh?
Florence Pugh is scheduled to star in two big films in 2026, and interestingly, they will be released around the same time. She will return as Princess Irulan in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Three, which is set to premiere on December 18th.
The upcoming film will feature a larger role for Princess Irulan, mirroring a previous agreement with Zendaya to develop her character in the first movie and continue that development if a sequel was made. Villeneuve explained he made a similar deal regarding Florence Pugh’s character, introducing her in Part Two. He also noted that if Dune Messiah is adapted, Princess Irulan will be a central figure in that story.
Florence Pugh will return as Yelena Belova on December 18th. She’ll be joined by her Thunderbolts co-stars – Wyatt Russell as U.S. Agent, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Hanna John-Kamen as Ghost, and Lewis Pullman as Sentry – as they all reprise their roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday, will star Chris Hemsworth and Letitia Wright, alongside the cast of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. It will also include beloved characters from the X-Men series, such as Patrick Stewart, Kelsey Grammer, and Rebecca Romijn. Notably, Channing Tatum is returning as Gambit, much to the excitement of Marvel fans.
Midsommar is available to stream on HBO Max until January 31.
