Jeremy Renner’s “Masterpiece” Sci-Fi Thriller That “Tore Me Apart” Is Set to Leave Free Streaming

Get ready to say goodbye to one of the best sci-fi movies ever made – and a personal favorite of Jeremy Renner’s – on free streaming. Starring Renner alongside Amy Adams and Forest Whitaker, this modern classic tells the story of aliens arriving on Earth. However, unlike many other sci-fi blockbusters (like Ice Cube’s War of the Worlds), it’s not about destruction or attacking famous landmarks. It’s a strange, thought-provoking film called Arrival, and it won’t be available to stream for free much longer.

I absolutely love Arrival, and I just saw it’s currently available to watch for free on Tubi! But, sadly, it won’t be there forever. Tubi lists it as leaving soon, though they don’t tell you exactly when things disappear. My guess is it’ll be gone by the end of January 2026, as they get ready for their new February releases. If you’re like me and haven’t seen it yet – or want to watch it again – I’d definitely recommend checking it out on Tubi while you still can! You wouldn’t want to miss out.

The film is inspired by Ted Chiang’s short story “Story of Your Life,” and Eric Heisserer wrote the screenplay. Denis Villeneuve directed the movie, which stars Amy Adams as Louise Banks, a linguistics professor who is asked to translate the language of newly arrived aliens. Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Mark O’Brien, and Tzi Ma also feature in the cast. Here’s what the movie is about:

When massive spaceships appear in twelve different places around the globe, linguistics professor Louise Banks is put in charge of a team trying to figure out who – or what – is inside. With the world on the brink of war, Banks and her team urgently try to communicate with the alien visitors. She risks everything – even her own life and the future of humanity – in a desperate attempt to understand their purpose.

‘Arrival’ Is One of Denis Villeneuve’s Best Movies (& That’s Saying Something)

As a total movie fanatic, I always say it’s amazing any movie gets finished, let alone a good one! But Denis Villeneuve? He’s something special. I’ve seen everything he’s done, and honestly, the guy doesn’t have a weak film in his entire career. Some are absolute masterpieces, sure, but even his lesser works are still really, really good.

Despite directing many acclaimed films like Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners, Dune, Sicario, and Incendies, Arrival stands out as one of Denis Villeneuve’s finest works. Released in 2016, the film has been highly praised, earning a 94% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. While some viewers found the plot confusing, audiences still gave it a strong 83% score. One Rotten Tomatoes user called it “a masterpiece about grief and love with one of the greatest plot twists ever,” and another said the final five minutes were deeply moving, praising Amy Adams’ performance as perfect. It’s a film many consider essential viewing.
