More than two years after its disappointing performance in theaters, The Marvels director Nia DaCosta has discussed her experience working with Marvel Studios. The film, which starred Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris, and Iman Vellani, received a mixed reception from critics and earned $206 million globally, despite costing approximately $270 million to make.
There were rumors of a disagreement between director Nia DaCosta and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, but DaCosta insists that never happened. In an interview with Inverse, she explained, “It’s funny how it was reported. It seemed really dramatic, but I genuinely love Kevin Feige, and we have a great working relationship with everyone there.”
Nia DaCosta had to leave the final stages of making The Marvels because of another commitment, and she finished the film from a distance. Many believed this contributed to the movie’s negative reception. However, DaCosta remains positive about the film, saying, “Ultimately, it’s a Disney movie; it’s made for families.”
Director Nia DaCosta recently shared her thoughts on making The Marvels, emphasizing that it was a good experience overall, even though the movie didn’t do as well as expected in theaters. She noted the intense discussion and energy surrounding the project within Marvel Studios, but ultimately felt proud of the effort everyone put in. “Looking back, everyone really tried their best to create a fantastic film, and I’m grateful for the relationships I built with the team,” she said.
The director reflected that everyone involved did their best with good intentions, and ultimately, that’s all anyone could ask for. She also mentioned visiting the set of Doomsday because several of her friends were working on the film, a testament to her good working relationship with the studio.
DaCosta shared that she learned major secrets about the Marvel Cinematic Universe, like Chris Evans’ return as Captain America. She said she’d known about it for years. As a lifelong X-Men fan, she was thrilled to visit the set and couldn’t contain her excitement. She even admitted to repeatedly asking Kevin Feige for spoilers, driven by her inner ‘nerd baby girl heart’.
Even though she seemed thrilled about the possibility, DaCosta later said she wasn’t planning a return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after The Marvels. She explained her excitement actually came from being a fan herself, saying, “I’m supporting them, and I know they’re supporting me.”
Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18, 2026.
