Last year, Netflix released a live-action version of the anime Kakegurui, filmed in Canada, with Miku Martineau (known from Star Trek: Section Thirty-One) and Clara Alexandrova (Danger in the Dorm) in the cast. While the first season received a mixed reaction, a second season was planned. However, it now seems unlikely to be released this year, disappointing some fans who were hoping for a quick return.
According to What’s on Netflix, the second season of Bet is currently expected to premiere in 2027, along with Wednesday Season 3 and other popular Netflix shows. Bet, which first came out in May 2025, follows Yumeko Jabami, a brilliant and adventurous student who attends a prestigious school focused on gambling, all while investigating the deaths of her parents.
Bet Season 2 Unlikely to See a 2026 Netflix Release
The renewal of Netflix’s series Bet is noteworthy considering its initial performance. It briefly landed in ninth place on Netflix’s list of most popular English-language shows worldwide during its first week. However, the initial buzz died down, and many viewers were ultimately unhappy with how Netflix adapted Kakegurui. As of January 14, 2026, Bet has a relatively low critic score of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Although audiences have been somewhat kind, Bet is still a fairly controversial addition to Netflix’s collection of live-action adaptations of anime. The story began with the popular manga Kakegurui – Compulsive Gambler, created by Homura Kawamoto (writer) and Toru Naomura (artist). As the title suggests, it takes place at Hyakkaou Private Academy, where students’ social status is determined entirely by how well they do in gambling.
Yumeko has a remarkable talent for spotting lies and deception, which quickly shakes things up at her school. This attracts the attention of Kirari Momobami, the Student Council President, who introduces Yumeko to a dangerous world of high-stakes gambling. In this world, students risk everything – their fortunes and reputations – for the chance to win big. The anime series Kakegurui first aired on TV in 2017.
Bet Is a Loose Live-Action Adaptation of the Original Kakegurui Manga & Anime Series
Because the series Bet is often described as a reimagining of the Kakegurui manga and anime, it adds new storylines. A prime example is the plot involving Yumeko Kawamoto (originally Yumeko Jabami) and her quest for revenge for her parents’ murder, which doesn’t appear in the original manga at all.
One smaller change that really struck me was how they reimagined Hyakkaou Private Academy as St. Dominic’s, an American boarding school instead of the original Japanese setting. It’s one of those things that some fans, myself included, feel moves away from what made the manga’s story so special.
Season 2 of Bet hasn’t started filming yet and is currently expected to be released on Netflix around 2027. While fans wait, the Kakegurui anime is available to stream on Netflix in most countries except Japan. The original manga is also published in English by Yen Press.
