Exciting New DCU Series Coming After Superman: What to Expect!

After the release of Superman in theaters, marking the beginning of James Gunn’s new DC Universe on the big screen, the franchise is now focusing on television with several new shows scheduled for the next few years. The arrival of Superman under James Gunn signaled the start of DC Studios’ new cinematic universe (achieving various box office milestones), and the franchise has ambitious plans across different media. This includes a significant focus on releases on HBO Max, which will follow closely after this film’s premiere.

DC Studios is preparing at least eight upcoming series (and seasons) for HBO Max over the next few years. Meanwhile, in cinemas, after Superman, more than a handful of fresh movies are set to premiere, continuing the storyline for the new DC saga. This will be accompanied by a new surge of serialized streaming stories that will push the boundaries of the new DC Universe into outer space, alternate dimensions, and lesser-known characters – both heroes and villains.

Every DCU Show Coming to HBO Max After Superman

Peacemaker Season 2

Coming next from DC Studios’ lineup is the second season of “Peacemaker,” co-created by James Gunn prior to its premiere in January 2022. This series continues John Cena’s character’s storyline following his work in 2021’s “The Suicide Squad.” In this show, he teams up with a group led by Amanda Waller to pursue an extraterrestrial race known as the Butterflies.

In addition to seven familiar faces from Season 1, Season 2 will also introduce some exciting new characters, among them the villains like Michael Rooker’s Red St. Wild and Frank Grillo’s Rick Flag Sr. As they navigate through different dimensions and face a plethora of fresh obstacles, Christopher Smith and his team will carry on their adult-rated escapades, encountering various iterations of Peacemaker in the process. The second season of Peacemaker premieres on HBO Max on August 21, 2025.

Lanterns

In a departure from the 2011 Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds, David Gunn is currently immersed in creating an HBO Max series titled Lanterns. This series, reminiscent of True Detective, will feature members of the Green Lantern Corps investigating a murder on Earth. However, as more ominous perils surface, these threats could prove to be much more formidable.

In the upcoming series “Lanterns,” set to premiere in early 2026, Aaron Pierre steps into the main character as John Stewart, a fresh recruit to the Green Lantern Corps, alongside Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan who is nearing the conclusion of his heroic journey. This show promises an immersive exploration into the personal histories of the key characters, particularly during a murder investigation, which will reportedly provide the richest live-action Green Lantern narrative to date.

Waller

As a dedicated cinephile, I can’t help but feel thrilled about the upcoming solo series starring Viola Davis as Amanda Waller in what’s being called Waller. Fresh from her roles in Peacemaker Season 1 and both versions of Suicide Squad, this new show promises to put the spotlight squarely on Waller. Notably, it will tie directly into the Peacemaker narrative while delving deep into Waller’s connections with her ARGUS team, particularly her daughter, Leota Adebayo, played by Danielle Brooks.

Unfortunately, it seems that the development of “Waller” is encountering issues, making it uncertain as to when filming or release on HBO Max might occur. There’s even a possibility that it could become one of DC’s many R-rated productions, given Waller’s strong performance in R-rated scenarios in both “The Suicide Squad” and “Peacemaker” Season 1.

Creature Commandos Season 2

James Gunn launched Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters in the DCU by debuting the animated “Creature Commandos”, which centers around an eccentric band of antiheroes and ex-villains. The first season culminated in the team defeating Maria Bakalova’s character, Princess Ilana Rostovic, before regrouping at Belle Reve prison, boasting a fresh roster.

Introducing a more advanced military robot, resurrected after its demise in Episode 3, this fresh squad also introduces new figures such as Nosferata, Khalis, and King Shark. The specifics of the storyline are still secret, but with The Bride now commanding the team, it’s guaranteed that chaos will ensue upon their reappearance.

Booster Gold

Initially revealed in James Gunn’s initial announcement following his takeover of DCU, the co-CEO unveiled plans for a series centered around Booster Gold. Known as “a time-traveling loser from the future“, this character employs technology to go back in time and “pose as a superhero”, seeking his own purpose and recognition.

Although viewers have proposed several candidates for the lead part, the actor or actress hasn’t been chosen yet, and most of the specifics about this upcoming series are kept confidential.

Paradise Lost

In addition to the upcoming Wonder Woman movie for the DCU, the backstory of Themyscira is set to be unveiled in the forthcoming “Paradise Lost” series. Unlike Game of Thrones, this show will delve into the political machinations within a female-only society and the origins of an island inhabited solely by women. It will also scrutinize the power struggles occurring among the most influential figures on the island.

At present, there are no names associated with “Paradise Lost,” be it creatively or with regard to actors who will appear on screen.

Blue Beetle

After Xolo Maridueña’s first appearance as Blue Beetle in his 2023 standalone film, the character and actor will have another opportunity to captivate audiences with a Blue Beetle animated series. Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer and Angel Manuel Soto, who wrote and directed the initial movie, are set to take on executive producer roles for the show alongside John Rikard.

Despite the lack of specific information about the show’s storyline and air date, Maridueña expressed his hope that the Blue Beetle series will be available on HBO Max around the year 2026, as shared with TopMob.

Krypto

By early June 2025, James Gunn officially announced plans for a new animated series centered around the superpowered dog, Krypto – Superman’s renowned pet. On social media, he hinted at this being an animated spin-off for our flying canine friend, set to premiere on HBO Max.

At present, it’s uncertain whether this plot falls within the broader DC Universe and its established rules, or if it’s a new addition. However, it appears to be under development as a complete series, set to premiere on a streaming platform in the future.
