Netflix has many excellent science fiction series, but Black Mirror stands out as especially thought-provoking for modern audiences. Created by Charlie Brooker, the show first appeared on Channel 4 in 2011, with Netflix releasing seasons three through seven. Each episode tackles diverse themes—from dealing with loss and the realities of fame to the downsides of online dating—and the show consistently sparks important discussions.
Enjoying shows like Stranger Things and 3 Body Problem can be a fun escape, but it’s safe to say we won’t be facing monsters or aliens in real life anytime soon! With Black Mirror recently renewed for another season, now is a perfect time to revisit the series, think about what terrifying scenarios might be in store, and appreciate how impactful the show has been.
‘Black Mirror’ Depicts a Dystopia That Feels Strangely Realistic

Netflix
It’s been over ten years since the first season of Black Mirror came out in 2011, and the show remains frighteningly realistic. While not every storyline from its seven seasons has come to pass – thankfully – several plots involving artificial intelligence feel especially unsettling because they closely reflect current issues.
The Black Mirror episode “Be Right Back” explores a chilling idea: what if you could communicate with an AI version of a loved one who has died? The episode follows Martha as she interacts with an AI recreation of her partner, Ash, and the experience quickly becomes unsettling as the boundary between what’s real and what’s not begins to fade. Interestingly, Amazon recently announced plans to allow users to recreate the voices of deceased loved ones through Alexa, a concept that, while intended to be comforting, raises some disturbing questions. As CNN reported in 2022, the company revealed this possibility at a conference, and it’s hard not to find the idea a little unsettling.
The first episode of Season 6, titled “Joan Is Awful,” includes a storyline about artificial intelligence. A company called Streamberry creates a TV show starring Joan Tait (played by Annie Murphy) and uses her likeness without permission. While it might seem far-fetched, the recent emergence of AI actress Tilly Norwood, and ongoing discussions in Hollywood about actors’ image rights, make it feel more relevant. In 2023, BBC.com reported plans for an AI-created James Dean movie called Back to Eden, raising questions about whether such technology is truly needed – and whether it’s right.
The Black Mirror episode “Arkangel” (Season 4, Episode 2) offers a chilling look at parenting in the age of technology. The story centers on Marie, who uses a tablet to constantly monitor her daughter Sara through a brain implant. While the episode presents an extreme example of overprotective parenting, it accurately highlights the significant and sometimes troubling influence technology has on our lives. Though parents aren’t likely to implant devices in their children, many do track their teens’ phones, making the episode’s themes of privacy and consent incredibly relevant and thought-provoking.
I’m really looking forward to – and honestly a little worried about – the new season of Black Mirror. It feels so relevant now, wondering what tech-focused stories they’ll tell. AI is becoming such a big part of our everyday lives, especially with Disney partnering with OpenAI. It’s just that, using things like ChatGPT is getting so normal, and it makes me think about how reliable the information we get is. It’s a little scary, actually.

In April 2025, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker explained to BBC.com that the show can now explore stories he wouldn’t have imagined a decade ago. He also noted that audiences are already familiar with many of the show’s concepts thanks to technology they use every day. Given the strong quality of Season 7, with its deeply moving and disturbing stories, it’s sure to be a season people remember.
