After A Minecraft Movie became a global box office hit in 2025, Warner Bros. quickly approved a sequel, joining the wave of upcoming video game adaptations. Jason Momoa has reported that the script is coming together smoothly, and he’s such a big fan of Minecraft 2 that he found the reading experience unusually enjoyable.

Jason Momoa became visibly excited when Jimmy Fallon brought up the possibility of a sequel this week. Here’s what he shared on the show:

This script is fantastic – genuinely hilarious! I haven’t laughed this hard at a script in ages. I struggled to understand the first one, but this version is a real winner.

Jared Hess and Chris Galletta, the team behind the first Minecraft movie, are writing the script for the sequel, which doesn’t have a title yet. Hess will also direct the new film, according to Deadline.

Before A Minecraft Movie comes out in April 2025, early reviews have been very positive, calling it genuinely funny and hilariously silly. Families who’ve seen it have enjoyed the blend of heartwarming moments, creativity, and lighthearted humor. Interestingly, audiences have even started playfully throwing popcorn whenever the phrase “chicken jockey” is mentioned in the movie!

I was so thrilled to see this comedy adventure become such a massive success! It really took off, earning an incredible $958.3 million at the box office. It was the biggest movie of the year, even beating out favorites like Lilo & Stitch, Superman, Jurassic World: Rebirth, and Zootopia 2 – those rounded out the top five, but this one truly shined. I even read that a big part of its success was because it got a whole new generation – Gen Alpha – excited about going to the movies, which is wonderful to see!

The movie not only lets Jason Momoa show off his funny side, but it also features a hilarious cast including Jack Black, Danielle Brooks, and Jennifer Coolidge. Momoa recently shared what it was like to make a comedy after focusing on action roles, saying:

Before this, I’d only done comedy on SNL, so working with Jack Black was my first time doing it elsewhere. Honestly, it made me realize how easy comedy can be! Everyone else just seems to go to work, have fun, and go home. Meanwhile, I’d finish the day covered in fake blood and completely exhausted.

Jason Momoa was surprised by how successful the Minecraft Movie became, and a sequel is already in the works. He mentioned that production could begin as early as April, with a planned release date of July 23, 2027. This would put it in the same month as the releases of the Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow, and A Quiet Place Part III.

Besides his work on Minecraft 2, Jason Momoa will star in The Wrecking Crew alongside Dave Bautista, which premieres on Amazon Prime Video January 28th. He’s also taking on the role of Lobo in Supergirl this summer and will play Blanka in the upcoming Street Fighter movie.
