HBO’s hit sports drama has quickly become popular worldwide. Inspired by Rachel Reid’s Game Changers novels, the show centers on Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov, following their journey from new players to hockey stars. Though fierce rivals on the ice, the two secretly shared a passionate love affair.
Okay, let me tell you about Heated Rivalry. It’s a really compelling show that gives us two LGBTQ+ romances unfolding within the high-stakes world of professional hockey. What I loved is how it tackles the challenges these players face, trying to navigate their personal lives in such a traditionally masculine environment. It’s a steamy, feel-good romance at its core, but it doesn’t shy away from the complexities of family relationships, which really adds depth to the characters’ emotional journeys. Honestly, it’s a refreshingly honest and beautiful portrayal of queer love.
HBO’s Heated Rivalry Is the Steamy Sports Drama that Became a Viral Sensation
Jacob Tierney adapted and produced Heated Rivalry, writing and directing all six episodes of the popular show. The story starts in December 2008 with a meeting between Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov outside a hockey rink. Shane praises Ilya’s skills, and while the conversation is a bit clumsy, there’s a clear connection between them.
I was completely gripped by “Rookies.” The episode really zips through Shane and Ilya’s first season, focusing on all the times their paths crossed. You could just feel the tension between them – they were always aware of each other, and it was palpable in every scene. It’s amazing how much they communicated without even speaking for the first few minutes – just glances and small gestures. Seriously, even something as mundane as riding stationary bikes and sharing water felt incredibly charged and dramatic. It was fantastic!
Beginning in the early 2000s, it’s easy to understand why LGBTQ+ athletes would have been hesitant to come out. Sports were, and often still are, a very traditionally masculine and sometimes unwelcoming environment. While attitudes have improved considerably since then, many athletes used common excuses to hide their sexuality, like claiming they were simply exploring their identity. The show Heated Rivalry features intimate scenes, but they are more focused on genuine emotion and character development than explicit sexuality. The creators prioritized portraying vulnerability and connection rather than simply trying to be provocative.
The show explores themes of being an outsider, and while it deals with serious issues, it also uses playful humor to lighten the mood. For example, after a private moment between Shane and Ilya, Shane’s mother, Yuna, bluntly expresses her disapproval, saying she really doesn’t like Ilya. This unexpected outburst makes Shane laugh. The humor continues with a subtle detail when they swap phone numbers – Ilya saves their contacts as ‘Lily’ for himself and ‘Jane’ for Shane.
It’s obvious after the first two episodes that Shane and Ilya’s relationship is developing into something serious. Ilya challenges Shane, and their growing connection is frightening for both of them. Following two intense episodes focused on Ilya and Shane’s complicated romance, Heated Rivalry shifts gears to explore a different queer love story by flashing back a few months.
Heated Rivalry Delivers More than One Unapologetic and Groundbreaking Queer Love Story
The third episode, titled “Hunter,” focuses on Scott Hunter (François Arnaud), an American hockey player who is older and keeping his sexuality private. He meets Kip (Robbie G.K.) at a juice bar during a morning run, and they immediately feel a connection. Scott playfully flirts with Kip while ordering a blueberry smoothie with extra banana. Just as he’s about to leave, someone recognizes him as a professional hockey player.
Kip met Scott one night while working. Scott returned the next day, explaining he was a bit superstitious and wanted to come back for future game days. Kip initially doubted Scott was attracted to him, but a coworker noticed a connection and Kip started scheduling work shifts whenever Scott had home games. During Scott’s third visit, he invited Kip to a game. They later ran into each other at an event where Kip was working as a waiter.
After the event, Scott suggests to Kip that they get something better to eat, and they quickly agree to go back to Scott’s place and order takeout. Scott was much more open and honest about his feelings than Shane and Ilya had been. He invites Kip to stay over, and the next morning, he playfully suggests Kip move in with him. Scott admits he’s been keeping his sexuality private and had planned to explore a relationship after retirement, but meeting Kip changed everything – he couldn’t resist him.
Things were good between Kip and Scott for a while, but Kip, who is openly gay, found it increasingly difficult to hide their relationship and be dishonest. While he understood and loved Scott, it wasn’t enough in the long run. They eventually broke up after a friend told Scott how unhappy Kip was, pointing out that they both deserved to be happy. This conversation shifted things, and they both realized the relationship wouldn’t work unless Scott was willing to fully accept Kip publicly. Scott wasn’t ready to do that, so they ended things, though both of them struggled to move on.
After going their separate ways for several years, Scott and Kip reunited when Scott’s team won the World Cup in 2017. The victory was particularly special for Scott, as it fulfilled a lifelong dream, and was achieved with Shane and Ilya sidelined by injuries. During the on-ice celebration with friends and family, Scott spotted Kip in the crowd. He invited Kip to join him, and in a very public moment, revealed their relationship with a kiss.
Shane and Ilya watched with intense anticipation. After Shane was hurt and recovering in the hospital, Ilya came to check on him. Shane then asked Ilya to spend the summer with him at his secluded cottage, hoping they could finally relax and explore their connection. Seeing Scott’s passionate kiss had inspired them both to take a chance on their own feelings.
Ilya let Shane know he was heading to the cabin. The last scene was filled with sweet and genuine moments between them – they finally told each other ‘I love you.’ Shane then came up with a plan for them to start being openly affectionate in public, until they could fully retire and be themselves. Everything was going wonderfully until Shane’s father unexpectedly arrived and saw them kissing.
The Sleeper Hit Sports Drama Is More Than Just a Romance
Ilya and Shane face difficulties not only as gay hockey players, but also due to complex family situations. Shane’s mother prioritizes his career, securing sponsorships and carefully managing his diet to maximize his performance. His father, David, is portrayed as more easygoing.
It drives me crazy when Shane shows up late, and then tries to explain it away with some story about getting lost watching YouTube videos! This time, he said he was watching videos of animals being friends, which felt like a total fib. Then David, being the practical one, asked what he should be watching – hockey, of course! It really highlighted how different they are as parents. David was clearly saying those animal videos weren’t a good use of his time, while Shane seemed to think it was perfectly fine. It’s just a funny example of their contrasting approaches to everything.
Yuna puts a lot of pressure on Shane, but it’s nothing compared to the intense pressure Ilya faces. Ilya’s father was constantly critical and never satisfied with his performance, viewing every defeat as a personal and national failure. To make matters worse, Ilya’s brother Alexei struggled with drug addiction and exploited Ilya financially. As the story progresses rapidly, jumping ahead months at a time, Ilya’s father begins to exhibit symptoms of dementia.
Ilya hires Alexei to look after his ailing father. When his father passes away, Ilya abruptly returns to Russia. Shane was concerned and repeatedly tried to reach him. Following a fight with his brother, Ilya calls Shane, attempting to share what he’s going through, but finds it too difficult to express himself in English given everything else happening.
In a deeply moving moment, Shane encourages Ilya to share his feelings, speaking to him in Russian. Though Shane doesn’t understand the words, he can feel Ilya’s pain. During that conversation, Ilya first confesses his love for Shane. When they meet again, their connection is intensely emotional and personal. They were falling deeply in love, but hesitant to fully commit to a serious relationship.
In the scene at the cottage, David unexpectedly sees Shane and Ilya kissing. Shocked and unsure how to react, he quietly walks away. Shane is panicked, but Ilya calms him down and goes with him to speak to his parents. Ilya knows his family wouldn’t have accepted him – his brother, Alexei, often used hateful language – but he’s relieved to have distanced himself from Alexei’s negativity.
David and Yuna were more shocked by the revelation that Shane was involved with Ilya than by the fact that Shane is gay, leading to an uncomfortable but funny dinner. Yuna briefly excused herself to cry, not because of Shane’s sexuality, but because she realized she hadn’t created a safe space for him to share it with her. She immediately began thinking about how to best support him, even brainstorming plans for his public announcement and handling potential sponsors. The show concludes with Yuna and David happily making plans to have dinner with Ilya and Shane.
The show Heated Rivalry features fantastic LGBTQ+ representation, which director Jacob Tierney strongly advocated for. Actor François Arnaud shared that Tierney originally had a deal with a large American streaming service for the hockey series, but they demanded changes, like delaying any on-screen kissing until later in the season. Tierney stood firm on his creative vision and ultimately chose to partner with Crave, a Canadian streamer. Although Crave had a smaller budget, it allowed them to create the show they envisioned, and it’s become a global phenomenon, widely considered one of the best shows in recent years. It’s clear why it’s receiving so much praise.
