We’ve received major news about the future of Game of Thrones, including details on three potential spin-off series and the status of a previously planned sequel focusing on Jon Snow.
What are the status of the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-offs?
George R.R. Martin recently spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about upcoming projects related to the world of Game of Thrones. The Reporter shared that the previously announced series focusing on the Sea Snake is now planned as an animated show instead of a live-action one, likely to reduce production costs.
HBO is also considering a large-scale project focusing on King Aegon Targaryen and his conquest of Westeros – the events that ultimately led to the world of Game of Thrones. This could take the form of a dramatic TV series or a large-budget movie, similar in scope to Dune. Additionally, a series centered on Jon Snow, previously in development, might not be completely off the table.
Jon Snow sequel potentially revived, adds additional character
According to the report, George R.R. Martin is hesitant about continuing the Game of Thrones series on television because the show’s conclusions will diverge substantially from his planned book endings. He explained that the book version will have different character fates – some characters who survive in the books will die in the show, and some who die in the show will live in the books.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, plans for a Jon Snow sequel are back on track. Quoc Dang Tran, who wrote Drops of God, is now involved to help develop the show. While the story is still being worked on, it might even include Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) again. However, HBO is being careful with the project, recognizing that it needs to be exceptionally well-made to meet expectations.
Look, as much as fans might want to see Jon Snow back on their screens, it doesn’t seem likely. Kit Harington himself recently told Variety he’s really closed the book on that character. After playing him for over ten years, he’s just not interested in revisiting that role, and honestly, I can’t say I blame him!
“Absolutely not,” Harington replied. “I don’t want to revisit that at all. I dedicated ten years to that role, and I’m good, thank you.”
