In 2023, movie fans did something surprising: they turned the release of two very different films, Barbie and Oppenheimer, into a combined event called “Barbenheimer,” where people watched both movies. This unique phenomenon hasn’t happened again since.
The attempt to recapture the buzz of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon with new movie pairings didn’t quite work as well. While both Barbie and Oppenheimer were hits, only Wicked found similar success. But don’t worry, Robert Downey Jr. is bringing the fun back later this year with a new pairing he’s playfully called “Dunesday” – a combination of Dune and Wednesday.
During a recent Q&A session in Los Angeles with Timothée Chalamet, the actor announced this as the next major event. While Downey Jr. and Chalamet are scheduled to appear during the same weekend, they’ve chosen to collaborate rather than compete.
“We both have films opening on Dec. 18th, and we decided to coin a name for it. We’re thinking Dunesday,” Downey explained.
The Oscar-winning actor joked, “We’ll see if we’re still friends by then.”
While the movie Glicked didn’t quite hit the mark, Dunesday seems to have everything needed for success. The recent Barbenheimer phenomenon also benefited from a strong performance by Robert Downey Jr., who played Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer – a role that finally earned him an Oscar. Downey Jr. is now preparing to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Avengers: Doomsday, but not as his previous character, Tony Stark/Iron Man, who died in 2018’s Avengers: Endgame. This time, he’ll be playing the villain, Dr. Doom.
The next superhero film will be a huge event, bringing together the classic Avengers with heroes from different universes. It will also finally introduce the X-Men to the big screen.
The upcoming film, Doomsday, will feature several familiar faces from the X-Men movies. Kelsey Grammer will return as Beast, alongside Patrick Stewart as Professor X, Ian McKellen as Magneto, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and James Marsden as Cyclops. Channing Tatum is also set to reprise his role as Gambit. While it hasn’t been officially confirmed, fans are hoping to see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool.
Dune: Part Three Will Feature a Time Jump
The next installment in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune saga will be based on the second book in Frank Herbert’s series, Dune Messiah. Picking up twelve years after the events of the first book—and the first two films—star Timothée Chalamet has confirmed the story’s progression.
Timothée Chalamet recently told Graham Norton that his character will age significantly in the upcoming film. He explained he’ll be portraying someone 15 to 20 years older than his current age.
Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three premiere on Dec. 18.
