Peter Jackson has suggested there’s a chance for another large-scale Lord of the Rings film, even though the original trilogy finished over 20 years ago. He brought up the idea while talking about how the franchise is remembered.
Peter Jackson says a mega Lord of the Rings documentary is possible
So, I was reading an interview with Peter Jackson over at Empire – can you believe it’s been 25 years since The Fellowship of the Ring came out? Anyway, he dropped some exciting news: he’s still thinking about doing a huge documentary about making the Lord of the Rings trilogy! Apparently, it’s something he’s considered for a while, and it sounds like it could really happen someday. As a huge fan, I’m definitely hoping he does it – I’d love to see a deep dive into how those films were made.
In the interview, Jackson discussed a passion project: a detailed documentary using never-before-seen footage from the making of the trilogy. He explained that this footage would reveal a much deeper understanding of the filmmaking process.
Jackson described the footage as including extra scenes, funny mistakes, and a behind-the-scenes look at how the films were made. However, he’s been unable to convince the studio to move forward with the project, as it’s a massive undertaking, he explained.
It’s interesting to hear Jackson talk about this, considering the extended editions of The Lord of the Rings already include a lot of behind-the-scenes footage in the Appendices. Even with all that material, he says a significant amount of footage from the making of the films hasn’t been seen before.
Currently, no project has received official approval. However, director Jackson hinted that a more comprehensive documentary, potentially with studio support, is still a possibility. He also responded to ongoing fan requests for an “Extended Mithril Cut,” confirming that this version of the films isn’t being developed.
