I’ve always found Matthew McConaughey fascinating – he carries this air of intense seriousness, but you always get the sense he’s about to burst out laughing. It makes it tough to know when he’s being completely genuine and when he’s just messing with people. So, when rumors started about a potential second season of True Detective – especially after how amazing the first season was – I really wanted to be sure anyone involved was being straight with us. You don’t want to get your hopes up for nothing!
A fifth season of True Detective is coming, and Nicolas Cage is rumored to be starring. Recently, Matthew McConaughey, who played Rust Cohle, shared a photo on Instagram with his former co-star Woody Harrelson and the show’s creator, Nic Pizzolatto. The caption he included has fans speculating about a possible return to the show’s dark and mysterious world.

There are a few ways to interpret what an “original band” could mean in this context. Ultimately, it seems to focus on a fresh look at the complicated relationship between Rust and Marty. Alternatively, it might involve Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson portraying entirely new characters, with one of them possibly musing on the idea that time isn’t linear, but rather a flat plane.
Although it’s tempting to get carried away with theories, realistically, this might just be a casual photo of three friends, with no significance for what happens next. (Musician Suzanne Santo, who is married to former showrunner Nic Pizzolatto, seems to have taken the picture.) Pizzolatto himself suggested that McConaughey was likely just exaggerating.
Oh man, you gotta know the rumors you just started
@NicPizzolatto
Rumors about a potential True Detective revival will always surface, regardless of whether the original actors are involved, so that’s not my biggest worry. I’m more concerned about viewers getting overly excited without remembering how complicated making a show like this actually is.
Here’s a glimpse of what fans were saying, mixed in with lots of Rust Cohle GIFs and people repeating Matthew McConaughey’s famous line, ‘alright, alright, alright’.
- BRO DON’T GIVE ME HOPE 😭😭😭
- don’t. don’t give me hope. my heart just can’t. please don’t.
- Please don’t play with my feelings…
- Don’t tease us … but also do
- WHAT DOES THIS MEAN
- Bring Rust and Marty back, please 😭😭😭😭
- Peak holy shit
- this is what the fans wanna see
While reading through all the online comments, I didn’t find a single negative reaction – except for some people who said only the first season was good. Of course, HBO doesn’t make decisions based on social media, but I’m pretty sure a new season of True Detective with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson would be a huge hit – possibly one of their most popular shows ever. (Though adding dragons might help, but that’s probably just wishful thinking.)
Even if a sixth season is possible, it wouldn’t be simple. HBO might need to replace Issa López as showrunner after season five, and that change could be difficult to manage smoothly without everyone agreeing. So, even if these plans are true, a new season is likely a long way off.
Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey were set to star together in a unique comedy series for Apple TV+, called Brothers, which playfully explored their family connections. However, filming was halted in June 2025, allegedly due to creative differences, and the show’s future is currently uncertain.
