Okay, so everyone’s talking about Marty Supreme this awards season, and for good reason – it’s already racking up some wins. Josh Safdie not only directed it, but co-wrote the script too, and honestly, the performances are a huge part of what makes it work. Timothée Chalamet leads a fantastic cast including Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, even Tyler the Creator and Kevin O’Leary. But here’s the really fun part: Robert Pattinson is in this movie, and I genuinely didn’t even realize it until after I saw it! It’s a clever bit of casting, and a nice surprise.
Robert Pattinson is usually very noticeable in films, even with small parts. However, when I learned he was in Marty Supreme, I couldn’t remember seeing him at all. That’s because he doesn’t actually appear on screen physically. The director, Safdie, recently shared at a BFI Southbank event (as reported by Variety) how he came up with the role for the Batman star.
It was a surprising discovery that almost no one was aware of. He showed up and observed what was happening, and since I hadn’t met anyone from Britain before, he ended up being the referee.
Interestingly, Robert Pattinson voices the umpire who commentates during the British Open semifinals, a scene featuring Marty Mauser early in the movie. I wouldn’t have realized Pattinson did the voiceover if director Josh Safdie hadn’t mentioned it. It’s also amusing that Safdie asked a previous collaborator for help, especially since he reportedly doesn’t know many people in Britain.

I Can’t Stop Thinking About The Marty Supreme Ending, And I Need To Talk About Why
Robert Pattinson previously collaborated with directors Josh and Benny Safdie on their highly praised 2017 film, Good Time. In that intense and memorable movie, he played a criminal attempting to escape the police after a failed robbery, all while trying to help his brother with developmental disabilities. It’s considered one of his best performances, and I was eager to see him work with the Safdies again. While his recent cameo in Marty was a nice treat, I’m hoping he’ll take on a bigger role in a future film directed by one of the Safdie brothers.
I have to admit, even after all the hype, there’s still a lot to love about Marty Supreme, the record-breaking hit. It really feels like classic Josh Safdie – a compelling character study with a bit of an edge. The film takes us back to the 1950s and follows Marty Mauser, a table tennis pro determined to escape his humble beginnings and make it big. Now, Marty isn’t exactly a good guy – he’s willing to step on a few toes to get ahead – but surprisingly, you find yourself hoping he succeeds anyway. It’s a tricky balance, and Safdie pulls it off beautifully.
Timothée Chalamet is fantastic in the lead role, and the supporting cast is strong, though some might find them a bit overwhelming. It’s also fun to learn that Robert Pattinson made a surprise, uncredited appearance. Hopefully, Pattinson will have a more substantial role in a future film by the Safdie brothers.
You can now see Marty Supreme in movie theaters across the country, and it will also be available to rent or buy online starting February 3rd.
