Ever been curious about Survivor or what it’s like to compete on the show? The cast of season 49 is happy to share! Recently, I wrote about fan favorite Sophi Balerdi detailing the challenges of using the bathroom while filming in Fiji. Now, fellow finalist Savannah Louie is answering questions about beauty – specifically, why she didn’t have much armpit hair despite spending nearly a month on the island. She gave a very straightforward answer to a fan’s question and also addressed other common beauty-related curiosities.
Okay, let’s talk about body hair on Survivor. You probably noticed in the earlier seasons, contestants would get pretty hairy as the show went on, but it’s not as much of a thing anymore. Savannah actually told me she gets laser hair removal before going on the island! She’s done it before, and decided to do it again knowing she’d be on national TV and wanted to feel confident – or as confident as you can when you’re, you know, starving and competing for a million dollars!
Playing Survivor requires preparation on all fronts – physically, mentally, and even aesthetically. Since the show is broadcast nationally, contestants naturally want to make a good impression with their appearance.
Savannah was just sharing her own experience, but other contestants have mentioned laser hair removal before. Lauren Ashley-Beck from Island Of The Idols was surprised to find out many of the women on the show had gotten laser hair removal, while she hadn’t. Over time, it’s become more and more common – starting with hardly anyone getting it, then a few women, and now it seems like most do.
Getting ready for the show wasn’t just about skincare. In the same video, Louie mentioned several other things she did before returning for 50. She had Botox, got a manicure and pedicure, and dyed her hair. Interestingly, she didn’t do anything with her eyelashes. She was surprised to learn that many contestants on Survivor 50 had eyelash extensions or lifts, and she suspects this might be because the players have more experience with the show overall.
I’ve always loved Survivor because, at its heart, it’s about how people handle being totally stripped of comfort. It’s genuinely awful to be stranded with no food, a terrible place to sleep, and a bunch of strangers, all while facing the dangers of the wild. The winners aren’t necessarily the strongest, but the ones who can stay focused and make smart decisions despite all that hardship. So honestly, I completely support anyone doing what they need to get ready – mentally or physically. If that means a detailed beauty routine? That just seems like smart preparation to me, and it’s clear the cast of Survivor 49 understands that!
Don’t miss the return of Savannah and other fan favorites when Survivor 50 premieres on February 25th! This season has an incredible cast, and it’s going to be amazing to see players from different seasons and eras compete together.
