The Old Guard 2 Left Me Furious: What Happened to My Favorite Characters?

Each streaming platform has experienced some blockbuster hits, and if you’re among Netflix subscribers, chances are you recall the unprecedented success of “The Old Guard” in 2020. Starring Charlize Theron, this action movie drew a staggering 78 million viewers on Netflix, leading to an immediate sequel announcement. I was hooked and caught up with “The Old Guard 2,” but the film’s ending has left me quite puzzled.

Viewers found themselves disappointed with “The Old Guard 2,” even though the initial film had earned much favorable regard. In contrast, I appreciated it more than many others, but the finale of “The Old Guard 2” left me feeling so frustrated that I considered chucking something against a wall. The majority of plotlines were left unresolved, and the cliffhanger ending kept the outcome of most characters uncertain. Frankly, why would you leave fans hanging like that with no resolution at all?

Almost None Of The Stories Were Resolved By The Old Guard 2’s Ending

It seems as if the Netflix sequel aimed to mimic the shocking twist from the ending of Avengers: Infinity War, as Charlize Theron’s character, Andy, couldn’t overcome Uma Thurman’s villain, Discord, who resembled Thanos. Consequently, her entire team suffered defeats. The question now remains: How long will we have to wait for another movie?

In the heart of the sequel’s storyline, it emerged that KiKi Layne’s character, Nile, possessed the power to strip others of immortality. It was then unveiled that Discord aimed to exploit this power to regain her own immortality. However, this plan never materialized on screen. Instead, Nile is kidnapped and her subsequent whereabouts or voice remain a mystery throughout the rest of the story.

Similarly, it applies to beloved characters Joe and Nicky, who significantly contribute to LGBTQ+ representation within the series. Just like Nile, they were taken captive, leaving their final outcome uncertain. Whether they will be parted remains to be seen, although I fervently hope otherwise. However, in the end, only time will tell.

A significant portion of “The Old Guard 2” seemed to be leading towards the long-awaited confrontation between Andy and Discord. The return of “Kill Bill’s” Thurman with her katana was exciting, but the fight didn’t provide any resolution regarding the rest of the storyline. With all that anticipation, not having a conclusion, and neither character meeting their end, left me feeling somewhat disappointed.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but express my hope that we’ll soon see a third installment of “The Old Guard” series. Given that there’s no official confirmation yet, it’s somewhat nerve-wracking to think the franchise’s story might remain unresolved. Here’s to hoping Netflix continues to appreciate the success of this gripping tale and swiftly gives the go-ahead for a sequel. Frankly, I’m eager to find out how Joe and Nicky’s journey unfolds next!

The original “Old Guard” films are currently available for streaming on Netflix, and the sequel was added to their 2025 release lineup not long ago. However, as I write this piece, the sequel is no longer among the top 10 movies on the platform.
