Steven Knight, the creator of the BBC/FX series Taboo, still hopes to make a second season, almost ten years after the show first aired in 2017. The eight-episode series featured a strong cast including Tom Hardy, Jessie Buckley, and Stephen Graham. Originally, the plan was for Taboo to have three seasons, and a second season was quickly confirmed after the first aired.
Although a second season didn’t happen, the writer remains hopeful. He told Radio Times that he and Tom have discussed potential ideas. “We know what we would do,” he said, explaining that the challenge is simply finding the time. He also mentioned he frequently receives questions about a continuation, particularly from viewers in the United States.
Knight has previously said that both he and Hardy want to continue the show, and that many people are hoping they will. However, he explained that the show’s future depends on working out everyone’s schedules and figuring out the best direction for it to take.
The show Taboo was originally planned to begin filming its second season in 2023, but those plans were delayed for reasons that haven’t been made public. It’s likely the delay was due to scheduling conflicts. Tom Hardy, the lead actor known for his role in Venom, has expressed enthusiasm for a second season and shared his ideas for the future storyline, indicating the show is a passion project for him.
Hardy explained his thought process: “I imagined the Delaney family arriving in America or Canada, then jumping ahead to 1968 during the Tet Offensive and the Vietnam War. I wanted to explore the roles of the CIA, the Viet Cong, and the French presence in Saigon. I envisioned taking the Delaney family’s complex relationships and transplanting them to a jungle setting, recreating the same dynamics they had in London, but with a new cast of characters. The idea is to show how history and corruption tend to repeat themselves. It’s still a story with the same themes as Taboo, still a period piece, but set in the 1960s, which offers a lot of creative possibilities.”
Although we don’t have a confirmed start date for season two of Taboo, Tom Hardy and Steven Knight are still committed to making it happen, which is a good sign for the show’s future.
