Be warned: This article reveals major plot details from the end of Greenland 2: Migration. If you haven’t seen this exciting disaster movie yet, stop reading now!
The highly anticipated sequel, Greenland 2: Migration, is now scheduled for release in 2026. Picking up five years after the first film, the movie follows the Garrity family as they try to build a new life in Europe, having spent years sheltering in an Arctic bunker. Many viewers are likely wondering if the family will finally find safety, and if everyone will make it through the journey.
Let’s discuss the ending of Greenland 2 and why Morena Baccarin was so surprised by how it all concluded. There’s a lot to go over, so let’s dive in!

What Happens At The End Of Greenland 2
Again, major spoilers for Greenland 2: Migration follow…
Okay, so with all the spoiler talk aside, let’s dive into how Greenland 2: Migration ends. The movie, directed by Ric Roman Waugh, follows John Garrity (Gerard Butler), his wife Allison (Morena Baccarin), and their son Nathan (Roman Griffin Davis) as they desperately try to get from Greenland to Europe. They’re hoping to find this rumored valley that’s supposedly still livable, five years after that asteroid basically wrecked the planet. It’s a pretty intense journey, as you might expect!
John faces a serious challenge: he’s diagnosed with a fast-moving cancer caused by the radiation he’s been exposed to during his travels in the dangerous wasteland. At first, I believed he would overcome it, but it soon becomes clear his only focus is ensuring his family’s survival. Surprisingly, though, it isn’t the cancer that ultimately takes his life.
During a climactic chase scene, John is fatally shot while protecting his family. He dies in his wife and son’s arms as they finally reach their destination. Though he accomplished what he set out to do, he didn’t survive to see it.

What Morena Baccarin Said About John’s Shocking Death
I recently spoke with Morena Baccarin after seeing Greenland 2: Migration. We talked about her reaction to the surprising and sad death of her co-star’s character, John. While she was initially shocked by the storyline, she now believes it was a logical decision for the film.
I had an idea of what the movie was going to do, but it still surprised me. Looking back, it actually makes a lot of sense considering everything that happened. It really proves he’s a true hero who would do anything for his family. He promised to keep us safe and give us a fresh start, and he followed through.
Like many of Gerard Butler’s best roles, John Garrity is both tough and heroic in the second Greenland movie, as Morena Baccarin pointed out. I was hoping to see him take on enemies with the same intensity as his character in Den of Thieves 2, but he faced his final challenge with courage in Greenland 2.

There Was An Earlier Scene That Baccarin Originally Fought Against
Just before the Garrity family’s trip to Europe, the movie features a very powerful and heartbreaking scene where John reveals to Allison that he’s been diagnosed with cancer and has only a few weeks to live. It’s easily one of the most emotionally impactful moments in the film, and it’s stayed with me. Interestingly, when I spoke with actress Baccarin, she explained that she originally tried to avoid a common cliché often seen in disaster movies.
I strongly opposed shooting that scene. I believed it relied too heavily on predictable, overused emotional clichés common in hero movies. I pleaded with the director, writers, and Gerard, explaining my concerns and why I thought it was a mistake. I was worried it would reduce my character to a stereotypical ‘weepy wife,’ which we had actively avoided in the first film.
At first, the Sheriff Country star wasn’t sure about a certain plot point, but she now understands why it was crucial to the story. She believes it sets up the rest of the movie and makes things more intense. Ultimately, it gives the family the push they need to keep going and reach their goal.

Where The Franchise Could Go From Here
What does the future hold for the Garrity family? While it’s still uncertain what will happen with the series, the film concludes with Allison and Nathan beginning to rebuild their lives. When I spoke with Baccarin about the Garrity’s next steps and the state of Earth, she offered a very optimistic outlook.
It’s comforting to think that life on Earth finds a way to recover, even after something terrible happens. Things are different now, but there are still familiar signs of life – trees, grass, birdsong. Seeing these things feels like proof that everything is part of a natural cycle, and we’re currently in a phase of renewal and rebuilding.
If a third Greenland movie happens, the ending of the first sets things up nicely for a continuation. The survivors could play a key role in rebuilding, as hinted at by Morena Baccarin, and continue John Garrity’s work, fulfilling his vision.
Although Greenland 2: Migration ends sadly with Gerard Butler’s character dying right after his family reaches safety, the movie still leaves you with a sense of hope. Hopefully, this isn’t the last we see of this story.
