The Pitt Season 2: Dr. Whitaker Emerges as Dr. Robby’s True Successor

Be warned, this article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 1 of The Pitt. While a temporary replacement for Dr. Robby (Noah Howell) has already arrived on the HBO Max medical drama, the show has also begun to introduce his permanent successor. In the first episode of Season 2, Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi (Sepideh Moafi) was introduced as Robby’s replacement at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Though Al-Hashimi is filling the role for the time being, the episode also hinted at another character who could become the “new Robby.”

Robby has trained most of the actors in The Pitt, and many of them are capable of taking over his role at PTMC. While other doctors, such as Dr. Abbot, could also be interesting leads, Dr. Al-Hashimi demonstrates that the show could easily introduce a new character to fill Robby’s position if necessary. However, season 2 already hinted at an existing character being prepared to step into that role.

Whitaker Is Already Being Set Up As The New Dr. Robby, Not Dr. Al-Hashimi

Dr. Al-Hashimi has stepped in to cover for Dr. Robby while he’s on sabbatical, but she’s only taking over his duties as the attending physician. The first episode of The Pitt season 2 strongly suggests that Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell) is the more likely candidate to ultimately replace Dr. Robby, as he embodies the same principles and approach to care. While Dr. Al-Hashimi is filling Robby’s position temporarily, Dr. Whitaker is truly carrying on his legacy.

Robby and Al-Hashimi have very different approaches to teaching. Robby favors letting students explore and figure things out independently, while Al-Hashimi prefers a more structured and tech-focused method. Although Al-Hashimi now holds Robby’s position, she doesn’t quite fill his shoes – Whitaker, still a resident, seems a more likely successor.

In season 2 of The Pitt, Robby noticed Whitaker leading his team in a moment of silence after a patient’s death – something Robby himself had taught Whitaker to do the previous season. They also shared a heartfelt conversation about spirituality and Whitaker offered Robby support during a difficult time. This shows Whitaker shares Robby’s respect for tradition and spirituality, and is well-positioned to carry on Robby’s legacy in meaningful ways.

Whitaker’s Similarities To Robby Could Put Him In A Bad Spot With Al-Hashimi

Whitaker might face trouble with Dr. Al-Hashimi and the new hospital leadership because of his resemblance to Robby. Robby and Dr. Al-Hashimi are constantly clashing – he disapproves of her changes, and she doesn’t appreciate his relaxed approach. They have fundamentally different viewpoints, which could impact Whitaker.

Even if Robby and Al-Hashimi don’t become enemies by the end of The Pitt season 2—and that’s certainly a possibility—their disagreements will likely cause problems for Whitaker. Al-Hashimi doesn’t share Whitaker’s reverence for tradition, and her upcoming changes could frustrate him. If Whitaker voices his concerns, as Robby would, Al-Hashimi might not react well.

Whitaker has really blossomed under Robby’s guidance, becoming a much more confident and capable doctor compared to how he was in the first season of The Pitt. However, this progress might slow down with Dr. Al-Hashimi, especially since he appears to share Robby’s beliefs. While Al-Hashimi probably won’t intentionally hinder Whitaker, it’s likely he’ll find it challenging to work with someone so different from Robby after the events of The Pitt season 2.
