The Late Show Is Ending For Good In CBS Cancellation Shocker, And I Relate So Hard To Stephen Colbert’s Reaction

In contrast to past times when late-night talk shows like those hosted by David Letterman and Jay Leno were prominent fixtures of network television, CBS’s decision to discontinue “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” may come as a surprise to many. Colbert, who has been hosting the program since it replaced “Late Show with David Letterman,” recently announced this change. This move not only marks the end of Colbert’s tenure as CBS’s late-night host but also signifies the final episode of “The Late Show” overall.

In the 2025 television schedule, there have been some unexpected changes happening late at night. Even so, I didn’t anticipate this, and it seems that Stephen Colbert shares my sentiments in his recent announcement. During the recording of a fresh episode, he appeared visibly emotional and shared the news with the studio audience, stating:

Next year marks the conclusion of our long-running series on CBS. Regrettably, The Late Show will no longer air as of May next year. I understand your disappointment, as this isn’t just the end of our show but the termination of The Late Show on CBS. Please note that I am not being replaced; instead, the entire program is coming to an end.

Colbert continued by acknowledging CBS as wonderful collaborators. He then conveyed his appreciation to the audience (who initially booed but later cheered), the house band, and the “200 team members.” He mentioned that he hoped someone else could benefit from it instead of the show concluding entirely. There are still ten months left for The Late Show.

In a collaborative announcement from the Co-CEOs of Paramount Global, Amy Reisenbach as the President and CEO of CBS Entertainment, and David Stape in his role as President of CBS Studios, they explained the unexpected decision to discontinue The Late Show.

This move is solely based on financial considerations, occurring under difficult circumstances during the late-night hours. It has nothing to do with the quality of the show, its content, or any other ongoing issues at Paramount.

The cancellation isn’t because of any scandals, controversies, or rating drops; instead, it’s just a matter of financial considerations. This information emerged following Jimmy Kimmel’s comments from ABC’s late-night roster, who expressed doubts about the format lasting another decade. Seth Meyers from NBC’s “Late Night with Seth Meyers” hinted at potential sadness for late-night enthusiasts in the future. NBC made budget reductions for “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” in fall 2024, and CBS cancelled “After Midnight” a few months before “The Late Show” was terminated.

More to come…
