It might seem strange, but medicine and comedy often go well together, and no show has blended them quite like Scrubs. The show ran for nine seasons and, while it wasn’t as strong in its later years, it’s still popular thanks to streaming. And despite many attempts, no other series has managed to capture the same magic.
It’s likely the continued popularity of Scrubs is why a reboot is happening, bringing back J.D. and the familiar characters for a new season in 2026. However, even before the reboot was announced, a new series inspired by Scrubs quietly debuted on Prime Video in 2024.
The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy Is An Overlooked Medical Comedy On Prime Video
The cast of Prime Video’s The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is remarkably talented, which makes it surprising the show hasn’t gained a bigger following. The series stars Stephanie Hsu and Keke Palmer, with excellent supporting performances from Kieran Culkin, Maya Rudolph, Natasha Lyonne, and Sam Smith.
It’s easy to compare The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy, starring Hsu and Palmer as two close friends who work at a quirky hospital, to Scrubs. Like Scrubs with J.D. and Turk, the new show focuses on the challenges of balancing work and personal life. However, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy has a unique comedic style, blending the humor of Scrubs with the visual flair and sci-fi elements of Rick and Morty.
While it didn’t become as popular as shows like Scrubs or Rick and Morty, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy is a truly worthwhile show. At its heart are the relatable and well-developed characters of Klak and Sleech. The show surprisingly explores anxiety and mental health with a raw honesty, and its clever use of time travel gives it solid science fiction elements, putting it in the same league as Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Even though it doesn’t have the same close-knit team spirit that made Scrubs so popular, and it’s set in a silly, far-off future, The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy still realistically portrays the stressful and complicated lives of doctors and nurses, using dark humor to lighten the mood.
Is The Second Best Hospital In The Galaxy Season 3 Happening?
Though the first and second seasons of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy were filmed at the same time, they weren’t released until over a year apart, in 2024 and 2025. The show’s creator, Cirocco Dunlap, wants to make a third season, suggesting more episodes are possible. However, Prime Video hasn’t officially announced whether season 3 is happening yet.
The show hasn’t been officially canceled, but the lack of news suggests Amazon may be satisfied with just two seasons. However, there’s still a small chance we might see another season of The Second Best Hospital in the Galaxy.
