Season 3 of House of the Dragon is coming later this year, but it probably won’t feature Graham McTavish as Harrold Westerling. After resigning in Season 1 because he was ordered to kill Rhaenyra, many fans hoped the knight would join her side and help her reclaim the Iron Throne. However, the character hasn’t appeared in quite a while.
I recently interviewed Graham McTavish about his work on the Starz series Spartacus: House of Ashur. I also asked him for any news about his Game of Thrones character, Ser Harrold Westerling. He jokingly said the character probably just got lost leaving King’s Landing, but then shared that he’d love to reprise the role. You can find his full response below.
MW: I’ve gotta ask, I’m a huge Game of Thrones fan. Where on earth is Harold Westerling?
I know he’s just roaming around, and it makes me wonder if he’s lost. It could be something with his horse, or even the head injury he sustained. I really hope Harold comes back to the show. I’ve spoken with the showrunner, Ryan Condal, and we both want to make it happen. It would take a lot of coordination, but I’d love to wear the armor again, return to Westeros, and finish what needs to be done.
‘House of the Dragon’ Still Needs Harrold Westerling

HBO
For most viewers of Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon, the focus is on the big events – the dragons, the battles. But building a world like Westeros relies heavily on the details and the characters who aren’t always in the spotlight. The earlier seasons of Game of Thrones did a great job of fleshing out those details, but as the show moved forward, it started to skip over entire areas and make characters act in ways that didn’t make sense, just to move the plot along. That’s when the show really began to lose its way.
Ser Harrold Westerling appeared in the first season, and while Graham McTavish is a skilled actor, the character wasn’t given much to do. I initially thought he could become a similar figure to The Hound – someone who seems minor at first, but then has a significant impact. While his departure might not seem like a big deal, consistently leaving storylines unresolved, as happened with Game of Thrones, creates a frustrating experience for viewers.

The actor has hinted he’d like to return to the show, but it doesn’t look likely for Season 3. While there was talk in 2024 about his character making a comeback, he hasn’t filmed any scenes. It appears the issue is simply finding time in everyone’s schedules, and fans would be thrilled to see him reprise the role, potentially as a member of Rhaenyra’s Queensguard, ready to get things done.
