Prime Video’s Gritty New R-Rated WWII Movie Is Now No. 1 In The World On Streaming After Quiet Theatrical Release

I just finished watching The Tank on Amazon, and I’m really glad I did! It’s a World War II movie that didn’t make a huge splash in theaters back in 2025, but it’s become a hit on streaming. It was originally released in Germany as Der Tiger, and it did well there before coming to other countries on January 2, 2026. I checked Rotten Tomatoes, and it’s currently sitting at a 62% audience score, which I think is pretty good!

I just finished watching The Tank, and it’s a gripping film. It centers around a German Tiger tank crew – five soldiers – sent on a clandestine mission across the dangerous Eastern Front in 1943. But it’s not just about the mechanics of war; the film really delves into the personal struggles and inner turmoil of these men. The cast is fantastic, led by David Schütter, Laurence Rupp, André Hennicke, Leonard Kunz, Arndt Schwering-Sohnrey, Tilman Strauss, and Sebastian Urzendowsky – they all deliver compelling performances.

Okay, so as of today, January 9th, I’m seeing some surprising numbers from FlixPatrol – “The Tank” is currently the number one movie globally on Prime Video. That’s right, it’s beating out everything else right now, including the newer release “Trap House”, the always-reliable Jason Statham in “A Working Man”, and even Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans’ holiday blockbuster, “Red One”. It’s also ahead of a bunch of other titles like “Follow My Voice”, “The Accountant”, “Tell Me Softly”, “The Good Neighbor”, “Wrath of Man”, and “Playdate”. Definitely a bit of a dark horse topping the charts!

For six days, The Tank has remained in the top 10 most popular titles. As expected, it’s been particularly successful in Germany and Austria, hitting No. 1 in both countries since January 3rd. Elsewhere, Fallout, the popular series based on the video game and starring Ella Purnell, continues to lead Prime Video’s TV charts.

Dennis Gansel has directed several films, including Before the Fall, The Wave, We Are the Night, Mechanic: Resurrection, and Berlin, I Love You. Of these, Before the Fall (with a 67% rating) and We Are the Night (60%) are his most critically acclaimed, earning a ‘Fresh’ certification on Rotten Tomatoes. His latest film, The Tank, currently doesn’t have enough reviews to receive a rating on the site.

If you enjoyed watching The Tank, I think you’d really like Nuremberg too. It’s a WWII drama with Russell Crowe and Rami Malek, and while it didn’t get a ton of buzz, it’s actually really good! It’s still playing in some cinemas, but you can also rent or buy it online, like on Prime Video. Honestly, I think more people know about Nuremberg than The Tank, but it deserves to be seen!

Prime Video is adding several new action movies in the new year, including The Wrecking Crew with Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa, which comes out January 28th, and The Bluff starring Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Karl Urban, expected in February. While these new releases could become as popular, The Tank is currently a surprising streaming success around the world.
