Nearly three years after its theatrical release, the biopic is gaining a new following on Netflix. Many iconic figures from past generations have had their stories portrayed in films and on television, and this film is the latest example.
The movie Priscilla is currently a hit on Netflix in the US, quickly climbing the charts to become the #2 trending film. It was first shown in cinemas on November 3, 2023.
With Jacob Elordi starring as Elvis Presley, the film is gaining popularity on Netflix just before the singer’s birthday on January 8th. Elordi recently received a Critics’ Choice Award for his role as the Creature in Frankenstein. Directed and written by Sofia Coppola, Priscilla—based on Priscilla Presley and Sandra Harmon’s memoir Elvis and Me—tells the story from Priscilla’s point of view.
The 2023 film Priscilla, starring Cailee Spaeny as Priscilla Presley, earned $33.1 million worldwide. Of that, $20.9 million came from theaters in the United States, and $12.1 million from international showings. The film was made with a budget of $20 million.
Graeme Guttman of ScreenRant gave the film Priscilla an 8 out of 10, describing it as another brilliant work by Coppola. He highlighted the movie as an exploration of a woman trapped by privilege and her quest for independence, with performances from Spaeny and Elordi that rank among Coppola’s finest. Guttman also commended Coppola for portraying freedom not as a dramatic rebellion, but as a quieter, more nuanced journey, which he found particularly beautiful in Priscilla’s story.
The movie Priscilla has received a positive response, with an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 64% audience score on the Popcornmeter. The film stars Ari Cohen as Paul Beaulieu, Dagmara Domińczyk as Ann Beaulieu, Tim Post as Vernon Presley, and Daniel Beirne as Joe Esposito.
