Great news for Star Trek enthusiasts! The 2026 TV lineup is taking shape, and Starfleet Academy is almost here. Paramount+ subscribers are getting a sneak peek with new promotional videos, and fans have already noticed a familiar alien species from the original Star Trek series.
The cast of the show recently shared a fun Instagram video where they discussed potential ‘red flags’ and positive qualities of a character. Star Trek fans can watch the video and try to guess who they’re talking about before the reveal!

You’re seeing this correctly: a Mugato is loose at Starfleet Academy in the 32nd century! Longtime fans of the original Star Trek might recall this species from the episode “A Private Little War,” where one famously bit Captain Kirk and he needed medical treatment. If you’re unfamiliar, here’s a picture of the creature, which was nearly destroyed by a phaser.

It’s pretty surprising to see a Mugato giving a high five in Starfleet Academy, considering they used to be seen as a completely wild species back in the original Star Trek era. But things evolve over 32nd century, and just like not every Klingon is a warrior, maybe a Mugato can be intelligent and academic too!

I was initially concerned a recent Star Trek: Starfleet Academy poster hinted at a shift in the show’s overall feel, but a new preview has eased my worries.
It could be, but I suspect there’s more to it than meets the eye. It’s odd that, when you watch the Mugato scenes repeatedly, it appears to be a person in a suit. While Star Trek often used physical effects, costumes, and makeup, the way this looks specifically suggests it is just a costume within the setting of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Honestly, it just feels like a school to me, with sports and everything – maybe even a mascot! I’m starting to think that Mugato isn’t a creature at all, but a student in a costume – like a mascot for the team, or maybe even part of a play. It would be amazing if the students put on a production of ‘A Private Little War,’ using Kirk’s Captain’s Log as inspiration. That would be incredible!
From the moment the poster for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy was released, I felt this show would be different from previous Star Trek series. We’ve seen several new Trek shows lately, and many have been well-received. I’m eager to see if this one will generate the same enthusiastic response from fans. Hopefully, we’ll also learn more about that Mugato!

You can stream content on Paramount+ starting at $7.99 per month or $59.99 per year.
