Avatar: Fire and Ash has become a massive box office success, earning over a billion dollars and breaking records. Directed and co-written by James Cameron, this film continues the story from the first Avatar (2009) and The Way of Water (2022)—films that currently rank as the first and third highest-grossing movies ever made.
Avatar: Fire and Ash premiered on December 19, 2025, and is now entering its third weekend in cinemas.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Avatar: Fire and Ash has now earned over $1 billion globally. The film reached this milestone late Saturday, with more specific numbers expected to be released Sunday morning.
With its success, Avatar: Fire and Ash has made James Cameron the first director ever to have directed four consecutive films that each grossed over a billion dollars. Those films are 1997’s Titanic ($2.265 billion), Avatar ($2.924 billion), and The Way of Water ($2.343 billion).
Before now, only the directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo had achieved the feat of directing three movies in a row that each earned over a billion dollars at the box office. They directed 2016’s Captain America: Civil War ($1.155 billion), 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War ($2.052 billion), and 2019’s Avengers: Endgame ($2.799 billion).
