The fifth and final season of Stranger Things has now aired, and the creators, the Duffer Brothers, are discussing the possibility of revisiting the story with the original actors in the future.
What did the Duffer Brothers say about a potential spin-off starring the main cast?
I recently chatted with the Duffer Brothers after the Stranger Things finale dropped on Netflix, and they’ve been fielding a lot of questions about all the spin-offs the streaming service is considering. It sounds like they’re exploring a lot of different possibilities for expanding the Stranger Things universe!
After the show ended with Eleven’s future uncertain, the creators were asked if they’d ever consider revisiting the original characters. They discussed the possibility of a new show set ten years later, featuring the original cast. Co-creator Matt Duffer explained that while their main story is finished, they’d only consider continuing it if the idea was truly compelling.
Honestly, we haven’t really thought about continuing it. I think the way we ended things – especially with the closing credits – was deliberate. We wanted to signal that this was it, the definitive end of their journey. It felt right to conclude the story of Mike, Eleven, Joyce, Hopper, and everyone else. It was always meant to be a coming-of-age tale, and those naturally have endings, so we don’t have any plans to revisit it.
Duffer explained the series concludes with Mike and his friends finishing a game of Dungeons & Dragons and leaving the basement to symbolize them growing up and moving into adulthood. He added that a future reunion of the group would likely feel motivated by profit rather than genuine storytelling.
The show was always meant to be a coming-of-age story, and closing the door to the basement symbolized the characters leaving childhood behind and stepping into adulthood, according to Duffer. While a sequel could theoretically explore a midlife crisis, he finds that idea unappealing. He doesn’t see a future for characters like Grandpa Hopper beyond the original story, fearing it would just be a cynical attempt to make more money. He’s currently unable to share details about the planned spinoff series.
Ross and I are thrilled to create new characters and build a new story world, while still aiming for that same feel as Stranger Things. We feel like we’ve wrapped up the story we wanted to tell about these characters, and the Upside Down, with this final season.
Although the original Stranger Things show has finished, the story isn’t over yet. The creators, the Duffer Brothers, are developing a spin-off series for Netflix, and they’re also executive producing an animated prequel called Stranger Things: Tales From ’85, which is coming out this year.
