Stranger Things Series Finale: Every Major Spoiler & Story Reveal

Be warned, this contains spoilers for the final episode of Stranger Things! The show has officially ended with a two-hour finale packed with big reveals and unexpected twists.

The season concludes with a climactic battle against Vecna, which the group ultimately wins. However, the ending isn’t entirely joyful, as Eleven faces a tough choice about her future in the Upside Down, leaving the fate of some characters uncertain.

Mike Believes That Eleven Is Still Alive

After a last game of Dungeons & Dragons with his friends, Mike shares his theory about what really happened to Eleven. He believes Kali created an illusion at the Gate, making everyone think El died when she closed the portal to the Upside Down. In reality, Mike thinks Eleven used the illusion to hide and escape, starting a new, peaceful life on her own, possibly in Iceland.

Kali Dies In The Upside Down

It appeared Kali died when the helicopter exploded in the Upside Down, but she might have survived long enough to assist Eleven with her final escape. Even if Eleven’s apparent death is genuine, Kali was still in the Upside Down at the time of the explosion, meaning she likely perished as well.

The Party Defeats Vecna & The Mind Flayer

Eleven arrives at the Abyss just as the group battles the Mind Flayer. While her friends fight the monster, El enters its body to confront Vecna directly. With Will’s help connecting to the hive mind, she gains the power to defeat Vecna, stabbing him as the Mind Flayer falls. Finally, Joyce delivers the finishing blow, chopping off Vecna’s head with her axe.

Holly & The Kids Are Rescued

After Vecna’s defeat, Nancy reaches Holly and frees her from the vines. The group then rescues the other children, including Derek, and returns them to Hawkins through the Gate. Though they encounter some trouble with the military, everyone eventually returns to their everyday lives. The series ends with Holly and her friends happily playing Dungeons & Dragons in the basement.

Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas & Max Graduate From High School

After Vecna’s defeat and the closing of the Upside Down, Stranger Things moves forward to the spring of 1989, 18 months later. It’s graduation day for Mike, Will, Dustin, Lucas, and Max, but Mike is reluctant to go after everything they’ve been through. Hopper encourages him to attend, and he arrives just in time to hear Dustin give a surprisingly defiant graduation speech.

Hopper Proposes To Joyce & Suggests They Move To Montauk

Hopper and Joyce finally went on their date at Enzo’s, and Hopper suggested they move to Montauk to start over. Joyce seemed receptive to the idea, but it felt more real when Hopper proposed. It seemed like they were both looking forward to a new life together, away from Hawkins.

Steve, Robin, Nancy & Jonathan Vow To Remain Friends Despite The Distance

Steve is the only one from the original group still living in Hawkins; he’s now a baseball coach and teaches sex education. Robin and Jonathan are both in college – Jonathan’s at NYU – and Nancy, after leaving Emerson, is working at the Boston Herald. They all decided to stay connected by meeting up monthly at the home of Robin’s eccentric uncle in Philadelphia.

Mike, Lucas, Max, Dustin & Will Go Their Separate Ways

Following the tale of El’s future, Mike shares what’s in store for the rest of their D&D group. Max and Lucas will remain a couple and eventually build a life together, while Dustin will balance his studies with continued adventures alongside Steve. Will ultimately finds purpose and self-acceptance. As for Mike, he’ll become a writer, continuing his role as the group’s storyteller.
