The media has already reported most of what’s known about the deaths of filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele. However, the Los Angeles Police Department has now sealed the official case records, meaning details won’t be released to the public for the time being. A judge has ordered the L.A. County Medical Examiner to only share information with the detectives working on the case. While it’s unclear when the records will become public, the LAPD is carefully reviewing all the evidence before a future court hearing. Shortly after the couple was found dead at their home in Los Angeles, their son, Nick, was arrested and is currently the only suspect.
According to Deadline, a court has blocked the Medical Examiner’s office from sharing any details about the investigation into the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. Reiner – including notes, reports, and photos. While law enforcement confirms the causes of death have already been announced, the LAPD explains the court order was simply to allow detectives to learn key information before it was released to the media and public. They emphasize the order wasn’t meant to hide anything. The full court document states:
On December 24th at 10:30 a.m., the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office received a court order from the Los Angeles Police Department to put a hold on information related to the deaths of Robert and Michele Reiner (cases 2025-19480 and 2025-19481). Although the cause and manner of death had already been made public, this court order means that information is now unavailable. No further details about these cases, including the full Medical Examiner reports, will be released or posted online until the order is lifted.
We know the public is interested in these cases and we’re committed to sharing information as soon as we can. We’ll release details once the court allows us to.
As a true crime and cinema fan, I’ve been following the Nick Reiner case closely, and it’s getting even more complicated. Even though the victims’ death certificates have been filed, it seems like the LAPD is being pretty tight-lipped about the specifics of the murders – and I suspect it’s connected to Reiner’s hearing coming up on January 7th. It’s unusual for California, but reports suggest he could potentially face the death penalty. According to Deadline, the prosecutors are planning to talk with the Reiner family before making any final decisions about how to proceed.
