The highly anticipated sequel quickly became a hit with online viewers, mirroring the success of the first installment. It became available to rent or buy digitally on December 30th.
Just like with the movie Wicked earlier this year, Universal Pictures released the digital version of the popular musical right before New Year’s Eve. According to FlixPatrol, Wicked: For Good quickly became the most popular movie for sale or rental on digital platforms in the U.S.
Before the release of Wicked, Russell Crowe’s historical film Nuremberg was the most popular title, surpassing both Elisabeth Olsen’s Eternity and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. It quickly rose to the top of Apple TV’s charts and remained there as of December 31st.
The second film based on the popular musical also became available for rental online in many countries across Europe, North and Central America, and Asia. It reached number one in Canada and the Philippines. Many fans revisited the first movie beforehand, and as of December 30th, 2024, the original Wicked film ranked ninth in Canada, as well as charting in Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, and other locations worldwide.
The movie Wicked: For Good (originally planned as Wicked: Part II) continues the story several years after the first film. It follows Elphaba as she continues to advocate for animal rights and uncover the truth about the Wizard, who, along with Madame Morrible, is working against her and portraying Glinda as a symbol of hope.
The 2024 film Wicked was well-received by both critics and viewers. However, its follow-up, Wicked: For Good, received a mixed response from critics, earning a 67% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Despite this, audiences loved the second film, giving it a strong 93% approval rating based on over 10,000 reviews, and it earned a ‘Verified Hot’ badge.
While Wicked: For Good didn’t perform quite as well at the box office as the original film, it was still a financial success, earning $505.2 million globally on a $150 million budget. The entire Wicked series has now brought in $1.26 billion worldwide, making it a major win for Universal Pictures.
The Wicked Franchise Could Continue
Jon M. Chu is directing a movie adaptation of the popular musical Wicked, starring Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba and Ariana Grande as Glinda. The musical itself is based on a novel by Gregory Maguire, which offered a new take on the classic story of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum and its famous 1939 film version. After more than ten years in the making, the story has been split into two films to allow for more in-depth character development, and production on both parts is now complete.
Given how well the Wicked movie is doing, Universal’s marketing head, Michael Moses, hinted that they feel a duty to explore more stories within that world. He confirmed they haven’t finalized any plans yet, but said they are actively working on possibilities.
The musical’s composer and lyricist admitted they were searching for the perfect concept, but weren’t convinced such a thing even existed.
Wicked: For Good is available to rent or purchase on digital platforms.
