Apple TV’s Severance Still Has The Most GOATed Finale In TV History

Arguably, Severance season 1 delivers one of the greatest finales in the history of television.

As a film buff, I’ve noticed something about TV storytelling. Shows really focus on making their openings grab you and their endings stick with you. That’s why so many series manage to create really compelling season finales, even if not every show manages a perfectly satisfying conclusion. They know the first and last parts of a story are crucial, so they put a lot of effort into those moments.

The first season of Severance ended with an incredibly memorable finale, one that the closing episode of season two couldn’t quite replicate.

Severance Season 1 Delivers One Of The Best TV Finales Of All Time

The first few episodes of Severance season 1 start slowly and require viewers to be patient. For a while, there isn’t much drama, as the Lumon employees who are ‘innies’ simply work without questioning their situation. But things begin to change when a new employee named Helly arrives and starts to challenge the status quo.

Before the central conflict of Severance fully erupts, the show cleverly sets up the Overtime Contingency, a protocol that ultimately proves crucial to the story’s climax.

As a total film and TV fanatic, I was completely hooked by Severance season one. It really drew me in, making me deeply invested in what would happen to those ‘innie’ employees and desperately wanting them to break free. Then the finale hits, and it’s just incredible – seeing Helly, Mark, and Irving suddenly experience the outside world is so intense! My heart was racing as they started piecing together the mystery of who they are on the ‘outside’. It was a truly gripping experience.

The situation becomes increasingly dramatic as Helly’s connection to the Eagan family is revealed, Irving discovers his outside self’s artwork, and Mark uncovers the disturbing reality of what happened to his wife. Meanwhile, the tension mounts as Dylan desperately clings to the control switches within Lumon, and Milchick frantically tries to regain control.

Right before the characters return to the present, they reveal Lumon’s biggest secrets. As the credits begin, you understand you’ve just witnessed something truly special – a complete and immersive cinematic experience.

Severance Season 3 Has The Perfect Opportunity To Recreate Season 1’s Finale Magic

The first season of Severance focused on the ‘innies’ – the work personas – trying to prove they were real people, separate from their ‘outie’ selves. Season 2 gave us a look at both the innies and outies, offering a more complete picture. With Mark’s innie choosing to remain at Lumon in the season 2 finale, it seems likely season 3 will center on his outie’s fight to maintain control of his life.

Since Severance hasn’t fully explained what happens when severed employees reintegrate, the show’s third season could end by essentially undoing the events of the first season’s finale.

With the ‘innies’ gaining more influence after season 2, the next season of Severance might reveal Mark’s ‘outie’ temporarily experiencing life inside Lumon, and discovering what his ‘innie’ has been going through. While the first season’s finale was particularly impactful due to its originality, the show could recapture that magic with a comparable innie/outie revelation in the season 3 finale.
