Netflix received a fantastic Christmas gift this year! The streaming service reported its highest-ever viewership on Christmas Day in 2025, largely thanks to the release of the second part of Stranger Things Season 5, which significantly increased the number of people watching.
Netflix hasn’t shared overall streaming data for the day, or how many viewers tuned in for the NFL games. However, they announced that the new episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 were the most popular English-language show on Christmas Day, racking up 34.5 million views.
As a critic, I’ve been watching the numbers roll in, and let me tell you, Stranger Things Season 5 is a monster hit! It’s just the latest in a long line of record-breaking viewership reports – the buzz started before the season even dropped. In fact, Stranger Things completely owned Netflix in the lead-up to its return, achieving something no other Netflix original has ever done. What’s even more impressive is that all five seasons are still hanging onto the Netflix charts – a testament to the show’s lasting appeal.
Riding the success of Stranger Things, Netflix released a recap on Tuesday that revisits the entire story leading up to the final battle with Vecna. They also announced that over 1.1 million fans have registered for a special event, completely filling over 620 cinemas.
Ross Duffer, one of the creators of Stranger Things, announced on Instagram that over 1.1 million fans have already confirmed they’ll be attending the finale screenings on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. He also shared that over 3,500 showtimes at more than 620 theaters are sold out. Duffer called it a fantastic way to wrap up the show’s ten-year run with everyone, and hinted he might see some fans in Los Angeles.
Stranger Things Continues to Break Records for Netflix
Netflix highlighted the continued popularity of Stranger Things, reporting that all four seasons have remained in the Top 10 most-watched shows for the past five weeks. This week’s rankings show Season 1 at No. 5 with 4.8 million views, Season 2 at No. 9 with 3.6 million views, Season 3 at No. 8 with 3.6 million views, and Season 4 at No. 6 with 4.1 million views.
The Broadway show Stranger Things: The First Shadow is proving incredibly popular, recently earning a Tony Award and breaking box office records at the Marquis Theatre with over $2.5 million in sales. As fans eagerly await the fifth season of the Stranger Things series, ticket sales for the stage show have reached an all-time high in both New York and London.
Season 5 of Stranger Things is receiving some of the most mixed reactions of the entire series. Unlike earlier seasons which were generally well-received, the final season has faced more criticism.
The final episodes of Stranger Things will premiere on Netflix and in select theaters on December 31st. You can stream all earlier seasons of Stranger Things on Netflix right now.
