Dan Trachtenberg’s 10 Cloverfield Lane, which was the highest-rated film in the trilogy when it came out nearly ten years ago, is moving to a new streaming service. The movie started as a small, independent thriller but was later connected to the Cloverfield series. It tells the story of a woman who wakes up in a shelter after a car crash, only to learn from the man who built it that a disaster has made the world outside unsafe.
Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, John Goodman, and John Gallagher Jr., the thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane became a big success thanks to its surprising story and ties to the Cloverfield franchise. The movie was both critically praised and financially successful, earning over $110 million on a $15 million budget. This left the franchise’s theatrical releases on a positive note before the next film, The Cloverfield Paradox, moved to Netflix.
The sci-fi thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane is moving to Paramount+ for streaming. After being available on platforms like Tubi, Hoopla, and Prime Video, the film will return to Paramount+ on January 1st. It’s expected to be available to watch almost immediately, potentially starting at midnight on New Year’s Day.
Although now considered a success, 10 Cloverfield Lane was a risky move for Paramount when it first came out. Similar to how the original Cloverfield launched Matt Reeves’ directing career (he later directed Batman films), the 2016 sci-fi thriller gave director Trachtenberg his big break. It was his first feature film, and it led to him revitalizing the Predator franchise with films like Prey, Killer of Killers, and Badlands.
The studio was also relying on the film’s unsettling and widely shared marketing to help it succeed in theaters. Both the studio and producer J.J. Abrams had used this strategy effectively before with the original Cloverfield and Super 8. However, because the movie ended up focusing more on the relationships between its main characters than on solving the central mystery, it would have made sense if the studio had emphasized that aspect in its promotion.
Since many people regularly browse what’s new on their streaming services, the addition of 10 Cloverfield Lane to Paramount+ in January will likely boost its viewership, as well as interest in the original 2008 Cloverfield film already available there. This increased attention could encourage the studio to revisit the stalled plans for a fourth Cloverfield movie, or even bring director Dan Trachtenberg back to the franchise, given his current success with the Predator series.
