Many factors contribute to why this superhero film is considered one of the worst ever made, but the most talked-about issue is likely the artificial nipples added to George Clooney’s Batman costume.
George Clooney finally explained the controversial Bat-nipples from the Batman & Robin suit. He’d been asked about them for years, and now he’s shared his reasoning.
It’s a little-known fact that Batman has nipples. It’s a humorous detail, and honestly, someone asked how he’d feed baby bats, so let’s just leave it at that. I’m not interested in discussing it further.
In a hilarious clip from George Clooney’s “Do They Know Their Lines?” series on YouTube, the actor defends the often-criticized 1997 film Batman & Robin. After jokingly misattributing a line to Fantastic Mr. Fox, Clooney launches into a passionate explanation of why he believes the movie is actually good, even claiming he was a fantastic Batman.
The award-winning actor is obviously joking, as he’s done many times before. He recently shared a story about his son dressing up as Batman for Halloween. When his son said he didn’t think the actor had actually been Batman, Clooney playfully agreed, saying the boy was more right than he knew.
George Clooney has said he initially thought taking on the role of Batman would be good for his career, joining Chris O’Donnell as Robin, Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl, Arnold Schwarzenegger as Mr. Freeze, and Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy. However, the movie Batman & Robin was widely disliked by audiences and critics for being overly silly, cartoonish, and lacking a coherent plot, proving his initial belief wrong.
George Clooney Hated Wearing His Batman Costume
George Clooney says the most uncomfortable part of his Batsuit wasn’t even the nipples. In a video with Variety, he explained that wearing the Batman & Robin costume was actually physically painful.
Honestly, filming wasn’t a blast because of the costume. That suit was really uncomfortable – it hurt, and I felt totally stuck! I couldn’t move much at all while wearing it.
The lead actor in the Netflix series Jay Kelly recounted a funny behind-the-scenes experience. While wearing his costume, he was placed on a board, lifted up, and asked to deliver a single line. Immediately after, the director called “Cut!” and the actor had to be carried off set—still on the board.
Clooney now says that in retrospect, that particular experience should have been a clear sign that Batman & Robin was going to become known as one of the worst films ever made.
Costume characters often present unique difficulties for the actors wearing them. Michael Keaton, for example, struggled with the Batman cowl during the 1989 film. He couldn’t turn his head and had to communicate with director Tim Burton and the crew without speaking, because the costume blocked his hearing.
George Clooney’s friend and frequent co-star, Ben Affleck, also criticized his Batman costume. He felt it lacked any consideration for the character wearing it and called it “horrendous.” Unlike Affleck, Robert Pattinson, who plays Batman in The Batman, is one of the first actors to find his costume comfortable. Designers focused on allowing him to move easily, which is important given how much time Pattinson spends in the suit.
It’s definitely a good thing that Robert Pattinson’s Batman suit doesn’t have the fake nipples seen in older versions. You can watch Batman & Robin on HBO Max.
