Every Winner at Japan’s Biggest Streaming Anime Trend Awards in 2025

As 2025 draws to a close, Japan is taking stock of which titles are the cream of this year’s crop. As one of the nation’s largest domestic streaming services, ABEMA recently crowned its gallery of champions through its annual “Japan Anime Trend Awards.”

On December 26th, ABEMA, a popular streaming service, announced the winners of its 2025 Anime Trend Awards. These awards recognize the anime series, opening and closing songs, and news stories that received the most attention and views on social media throughout the year. The competition included 11 categories, like “Best Short Animation,” “Best Anime Song,” and “Anime News Award.”

The Japan Anime Trend grand prize goes to the anime with the most online buzz, measured by combined searches on Google and posts on X (formerly Twitter). This year, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX, created by Sunrise and Studio Khara, won with over 57 million searches and 9.15 million posts on X. I’m so excited about the newest Gundam series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX! It just came out in April 2025, and it’s already amazing. The story follows Amate Yuzuriha, a young woman who suddenly finds herself in the middle of this intense, underground world of Gundam battles – it’s called Clan Battle, and it’s totally gripping!

The series started with a very positive response, but it also sparked a lot of disagreement among viewers. Surprisingly, this debate actually increased fan engagement and led to countless online discussions. Ultimately, ABEMA recognized its popularity, naming it the top trending and most talked-about anime of 2025.

ABEMA determines its trending topics, called “Hot Topics,” by looking at how many posts are on X (formerly Twitter) and also considering opinions from its users. Recently, a new show called The Style of Hiroshi Nohara’s Lunch – a spin-off of the well-known anime Crayon Shin-chan – quickly became a trending topic on X in Japan after it was announced. This was largely due to a funny scene from the show’s opening, which spread quickly as a meme online.

Hiroshi Nohara won first place in the TV anime “Hot Topic” category, while Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle topped the ABEMA Movie category. Released in July 2025, the film is currently Japan’s highest-grossing movie as of December 27th.

Apothecary Diaries Officially Crowned the Anime News That ‘Shocked’ the World for 2025

ABEMA’s Anime News Award recognizes the anime that created the biggest surprise in the anime world, whether through its story or unexpected news. According to PR Times, The Apothecary Diaries, produced by OLM and Toho Animation, won the award because of its announcement of a third season and the release of a special teaser trailer, both of which came out in July 2025.

Alongside the two-part anime series, early reports from the popular Japanese anime news website AnimeAnime! received more attention than any other article they published this year.
