Although 2025 saw many successful films in various genres, comedy didn’t quite stand out. While there were some good comedies released, many weren’t laugh-out-loud funny. Instead, we saw more comedies that were dark, cynical, or dealt with serious subjects, with humor playing a smaller role.

The movie Marty Supreme has received a lot of praise and is categorized as a sports comedy/drama, but it leans more towards drama and wasn’t included in our search for the best comedies. To find truly funny films for 2025, we focused on independent movies and comedies made by talented directors.

Oh, Hi!

Molly Gordon is quickly becoming a major comedic talent, and more people need to take notice. She really stood out in Booksmart, and has delivered fantastic performances in films like Shiva Baby, The Broken Hearts Gallery, and Theater Camp, which she also helped write and direct.

Gordon shines in Oh, HI!, a film he stars in and co-wrote. The story follows Iris and her boyfriend, Isaac (Logan Lerman), during a weekend getaway. Things take a turn when Iris discovers Isaac doesn’t want a serious relationship and sees their time together as just a casual encounter, after she playfully ties him up during an intimate moment.

Iris decides to hold him captive, hoping to change his mind and get him to be with her. This unusual setup leads to a series of hilariously over-the-top moments. Plus, Geraldine Viswanathan delivers a wonderful performance in a supporting role.

Deep Cover

Deep Cover is a surprisingly effective film, bringing together an unexpected cast. This action comedy features Bryce Dallas Howard, Orlando Bloom, and Nick Mohammed as improv performers who are unexpectedly recruited by the police for undercover assignments.

I was really intrigued by the casting in this new film. It’s about a group who go undercover, using their improv talents to get close to a dangerous London gang. Everyone knows Mohammed from his hilarious work on Ted Lasso, and he’s fantastic, but Howard and Bloom are usually in very different kinds of movies, so it was a bold move putting them in a gritty crime thriller. I was curious to see if it would pay off!

Everything worked out perfectly. Howard usually plays the sensible, grounded member of the group and naturally takes charge, while Bloom is incredibly funny as he fully commits to his improv characters, which often leads to chaotic and hilarious situations. The show, Deep Cover, is a thrilling ride full of surprises and has a 91% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Roses

The story of The Roses has been adapted before, but this latest version is particularly well done. The 2025 film, based on the novel The War of the Roses and a remake of the 1989 movie, benefits from strong performances by Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman.

The story of The Roses revolves around Theo and Ivy, a couple who appear to have an ideal marriage. But beneath the surface, tensions grow: Theo becomes envious of Ivy’s professional achievements, and Ivy feels increasingly distant from Theo as he develops a close relationship with their children after losing his job. I really loved The Roses! What truly makes it special, for me, is the chemistry between Cumberbatch and Colman – they’re absolutely fantastic together and really bring this darkly funny story to life. I also appreciated that the movie wasn’t afraid to take some risks and deviate from the original story, especially with that surprising ending!

Splitsville

Divorce is a difficult subject, so it’s refreshing to see it handled in a comedy. That’s a big part of why the film Splitsville is so effective – it brings some much-needed lightness to a heavy and emotional topic.

The movie Splitsville centers around Carey, who is reeling from his wife’s divorce request. He turns to his friends, Julie and Paul, only to discover they have an open marriage. Things get complicated when Carey sleeps with Julie, causing a lot of drama and upsetting everyone involved.

In 2025, many comedy movies moved away from simply trying to be funny and explored darker themes or more serious topics. Twinless is one of these films, a black comedy that takes unexpected turns and features directors you probably haven’t heard of.

In the story Twinless, Dennis and Rocky quickly become intimate, but Rocky then cuts off all contact. When Dennis seeks him out, Rocky is tragically killed in a car accident. Roman, Rocky’s identical twin, joins a support group for people who have lost their twin, and there he meets Dennis, with whom he develops a close connection.

The movie has a straightforward idea, and that’s what makes it so effective. Similar to beloved films from the ’90s like Friday and Clerks, the entire story unfolds in a single day, giving us just enough time to connect with the characters and enjoy their funny adventures.

Keke Palmer gives a fantastic performance as Dreux, and R&B star SZA shines in her first acting role as Alyssa.
