Neill Blomkamp’s first film, District 9, was a critically acclaimed and financially successful sci-fi hit from the 2000s. The movie, which uses aliens to explore social issues, earned a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and made $210 million worldwide on a budget of only $30 million. It even received four Academy Award nominations in 2010, including a nod for Best Picture.
Despite not winning any Academy Awards, District 9 brought director Neill Blomkamp into the spotlight, making him a highly sought-after filmmaker. He followed up with Elysium in 2013, attracting stars like Matt Damon and Jodie Foster, along with established character actors such as William Fichtner and Diego Luna. While Blomkamp’s initial success had waned, he recently returned to prominence with the unexpectedly popular video game adaptation, Gran Turismo. Though his latest film lacks the strong social commentary of his earlier work, it’s sparked renewed interest in revisiting those films, particularly Elysium, which many consider his most underrated.
Elysium May Be Neill Blomkamp’s Most Poignant Film
The film notably addressed immigration, especially the situation in South Africa at the time. Using the alien “prawns” as a metaphor for immigrants and the discrimination they experience – and depicting their impoverished living conditions – was a powerful storytelling choice by Blomkamp. However, the film’s specific South African setting might make the issues feel geographically limited to some viewers, despite the fact that immigration and prejudice are global problems.
You know, I recently watched Elysium, and it really hit me with a lot of relevant themes. It’s set on Earth that’s been pretty much wrecked environmentally, and follows this guy, Max, who’s just a working-class dude. He gets exposed to some dangerous radiation on the job – totally because of unsafe conditions – and basically gets a death sentence. It’s a tough watch, but really powerful, and the cast is fantastic.
Desperate for a cure, Max takes a risky, unauthorized trip to Elysium, a space station reserved for the wealthy. Once there, he confronts the robots he and other workers were forced to create – robots that now control and monitor them.
The current political climate in America is filled with conflict. Beyond debates about immigration and instances of violence against people of color, it also highlights the deliberate denial of healthcare to those in need and a broader pattern of discrimination based on social class.
Elysium Isn’t Just a Veiled Message, it’s Also a Hardcore Sci-Fi Flick
If you haven’t seen Elysium yet, don’t let that stop you! It’s a fantastic sci-fi movie packed with exciting action. You’ll find everything from robot fights and spaceship battles to powerful mech suits and futuristic weapons – it’s a treat for action fans.
Elysium is definitely not for the squeamish. It’s filled with intense violence and gore, comparable to the most graphic war or horror films. Expect to see a lot of bloodshed, including dismembered bodies, melting faces, and brutal injuries – the movie fully embraces its R-rating and doesn’t hold back.
Beyond the action and violence, the film gives Matt Damon another strong leading role, successfully combining the dramatic skills that first made him famous in Good Will Hunting with his ability to play an action hero. Jodie Foster delivers a standout villainous performance, truly establishing her character as someone to despise. Sharlto Copley, known for District 9, also appears as Kruger, a volatile villain who relentlessly pursues Damon’s character, Max.
While Elysium shares similarities with District 9, its technical achievements – the visual effects, sound design, music, and performances – are notably stronger, potentially making it Neil Blomkamp’s best work. If released earlier, in 2009, Elysium likely would have received similar, or even greater, acclaim.
Elysium is now streaming on Netflix.
