Spoilers for Avatar: Fire and Ash lie ahead.
James Cameron’s Avatar movies are famous for their incredible action and visuals. While the romance between Jake and Neytiri is a key part of the story, the newest film, Fire and Ash, introduces another couple: Colonel Miles Quaritch and a Na’vi woman named Varang. Their connection is especially noticeable in a memorable scene involving a tent. Cameron recently shared details about creating this scene and how it nearly played out differently.
Colonel Quaritch, still determined to capture Jake Sully for the RDA, teams up with the Mangkwan tribe and its leader, Varang (played by Oona Chaplin). He provides them with weapons, but before the alliance is solidified, Varang tests Quaritch – both physically and with a hallucinogenic substance, even cutting him with a knife. Since the release of the film, this scene has become incredibly popular online, and director James Cameron has shared his thoughts on why it’s so captivating.
It’s impossible to predict what will happen, and both characters are incredibly interesting. She’s particularly captivating in that moment – ‘mesmerizing’ is truly the best way to describe her performance.
It’s hard to look away from that intense scene, particularly when watching the third Avatar movie in IMAX 3D. Interestingly, James Cameron didn’t fully understand the implications of that moment at first. He told The Hollywood Reporter he originally thought Varang was leading the discussion, but later realized something different was happening.
I didn’t fully understand what I’d written in that scene until I watched the actors perform it. It became clear it was a double seduction – he’s trying to manipulate her, but she seems to be controlling him too. However, all along he had a plan, and it actually succeeds. As a writer, I’m pleased with the complex psychological interplay in that scene.
Cameron wrote the screenplay with Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa, both of whom had previously worked on Avatar. He was happy with the way a romantic scene between the characters Quaritch and Varang was written. However, the editors initially wanted to significantly shorten it, which prompted Cameron to firmly state his position.
I said: ‘Guys, you’re about to become unemployed — put it back, every line.’
Ultimately, leaving that scene in the film was the right decision. It’s not just getting a lot of attention now, but it also helps us understand Varang’s personality better. In fact, she’s quickly become a fan favorite character, and Oona Chaplin is excited about the possibility of reprising the role in future films. You can watch a clip of the scene below.
As a huge fan, I’m still a little anxious about whether we’ll actually get those last two Avatar movies. James Cameron says he’s prepped to shoot the fourth and fifth films, but he’s wisely waiting to see how The Seed Bearer (or Fire and Ash as some are calling it) does in theaters first. It leaves us fans wondering what’s next for characters like Varang and even Quaritch, whose story felt a bit open-ended. Honestly, I’m also curious if Cameron will include those really immersive, almost sensual scenes again if he does make more films – they were definitely a signature of the first one!
