Shortly after the acclaimed series The Wire concluded, its creator, David Simon, delivered another success with the HBO miniseries Generation Kill – a show that, like its predecessor, didn’t always receive the recognition it deserved. Following the critically acclaimed finale of The Wire on March 9, 2008, David Simon’s next HBO series, Generation Kill, debuted on July 13. This seven-part miniseries takes place during the 2003 invasion of Iraq and is adapted from Evan Wright’s non-fiction book of the same name. The series follows Wright’s time as a journalist embedded with the 1st Reconnaissance Battalion of the U.S. Marine Corps during the early stages of the Iraq War.

The series features Alexander Skarsgård and the late James Ransone, who previously worked with the creator on The Wire as a sergeant and corporal. Lee Tergesen plays a journalist known only as “Wright,” but consistently referred to as “Reporter,” “Scribe,” or “Rolling Stone.” Similar to The Wire, it examines difficult realities through the lens of a TV drama, but this time with a stronger focus on the role of journalism itself.

Generation Kill Is Essentially Band Of Brothers For The Iraq War

Similar to how Band of Brothers brought World War II to life through the experiences of individual soldiers, Generation Kill does the same for the Iraq War. Both shows focus on the human cost of war, moving beyond numbers and statistics to tell the stories of the people involved. Like its predecessor, Generation Kill features a large cast of characters, realistic detail, and cinematic-quality visuals.

Generation Kill delivers exactly what you’d expect from the creator of The Wire when tackling the Iraq War.
