At the end of Season 4, it was unclear what would happen to Sadie Sink’s character, Max Mayfield. Season 5 revealed that Max was actually in a coma.
Max didn’t join the show until the first episode of Season 2, but she quickly became a beloved character thanks to her strong personality and interesting backstory. Viewers were deeply concerned about what happened to her in Season 4. Her journey involved a connection to Henry Creel and Hawkins, and she also formed a close friendship with Holly Wheeler.
Before being captured by Henry Creel (Vecna), Holly was brought into a mental prison called Camazotz. Max, who was already trapped there, decided to help her escape. While they attempted to break free in Episode 6, only Max successfully returned to the real world. Holly nearly made it out too, but Vecna tricked her into going back to the Upside Down.
Holly was determined to break free from Vecna’s mental trap and rescue Max, who was trapped in a desolate, otherworldly landscape. When asked about Holly saving Max instead of someone with superpowers like Eleven, Sadie Sink said it felt perfectly appropriate and meaningful.
The actress was particularly impressed by the young person’s incredible strength and ability to bounce back. She said that’s always been the heart of the show – highlighting kids who overcome big challenges and ultimately succeed.
We also wanted to avoid making the source of their power something completely alien or impossible. While they’re in a strange dimension and traveling through this red space, the ability to escape ultimately comes from something internal – something within themselves.
She explained that the new relationship is especially meaningful for Holly, who has been deeply hurt by betrayal throughout the season. Finding a trustworthy friend has been a positive experience for her. She also mentioned Max’s difficult family situation and her complex relationship with Billy.
Sadie Sink Called Max and Lucas’ Reunion Her Favorite Stranger Things Moment
Sink also discussed the connection between Max and Lucas. While Season 4 used Kate Bush’s “Running Up the Hill” to help Max battle Vecna, Season 5 revealed that Lucas was the one who consistently kept her anchored. Sink clarified Max’s complicated history, explaining, “Lucas has always been there for her, even when she’s tried to distance herself. That’s just how their relationship works.”

The actress described Max waking up from his coma as a particularly touching moment, highlighting the emotional connection between the characters. While it’s still unknown if Max and Lucas will ultimately end up together or even survive, she believes that if they do make it through, it will confirm their strong connection and destiny.
Stranger Things Season 5 will conclude on Dec. 31.
