Jason Momoa’s The Red Road Returns To Netflix

Jason Momoa’s police drama, which originally aired after his time on Game of Thrones, is returning to Netflix. Momoa has had a very successful year, especially with his starring role in A Minecraft Movie. The film was a huge hit, earning almost $960 million worldwide and bringing his total box office earnings to over $5 billion.

Jason Momoa stepped away from big-budget films to star in the Apple TV+ series Chief of War, marking a return to television. It was just his fourth significant TV role since he first gained recognition as Khal Drogo in the early seasons of Game of Thrones.

As of December 26th, Netflix has brought back ‘The Red Road,’ Jason Momoa’s first leading role in a TV series after ‘Game of Thrones.’ The show is now available to viewers in the U.S. and select other countries. However, as reported by What’s On Netflix, those with Netflix subscriptions that include ads will not be able to watch it.

The Red Road is a twelve-episode drama that first aired on Sundance TV in February 2014. The show centers on a sheriff, played by Jason Momoa, and his difficult attempts to manage his personal life and the pressures of his job. He’s responsible for keeping the peace in both his hometown and the nearby Ramapough Mountains, which are the ancestral lands of the Ramapough Lenape Nation.

Things get even more complex because of a conflict between two local communities. A tragic event and the subsequent attempt to hide the truth—involving the sheriff’s wife—force Momoa’s character to form a risky partnership. The cast also features Martin Henderson, known for his role in Netflix’s Virgin River, Julianne Nicholson from Hacks and Paradise, and Kiowa Gordon, currently starring in Dark Winds. Rounding out the ensemble are Tamara Tunie, Allie Gonino, Annalise Basso, and Tom Sizemore.

Aaron Guzikowski, the writer of the film Prisoners (directed by Denis Villeneuve) and the HBO science fiction series Raised by Wolves, created the twelve-episode show. While critics gave it mixed reviews (a 65% score on Rotten Tomatoes), viewers generally liked it much more, giving it an 80% audience score.

Though canceled in April 2017, The Red Road is now available on Netflix, which should introduce it to a new audience. This timing is good, as Jason Momoa is set to star in several high-profile projects this year, including Dune 3, Supergirl, and Streetfighter. It’s a chance to see him in a smaller, more intimate story about a town filled with secrets and past mistakes.
