A Ghosts Star Told Me Why All The Furniture On Set Is ‘The Most Uncomfortable,’ And It Actually Makes A Lot Of Sense

The show Ghosts primarily takes place at Woodstone Manor, and even after five seasons, there are still mysteries to uncover about the estate. The house itself is constantly evolving, and the grounds are expanding, adding to the show’s rich detail. Asher Grodman, who plays Trevor, recently shared a fun fact: all the furniture used during filming is deliberately uncomfortable.

During a conversation with Grodman about his consistent costume choices and the challenges of playing a character without pants, the topic turned to the set design. Because the actors are meant to appear as ghosts, the furniture has to be specially made so they don’t leave any impressions when they sit – essentially, everything has to be very rigid, as the actor who plays Trevor explained.

Something people don’t realize about our show is that all the furniture – the couches, chairs, and even the beds – are actually made of wood. We can’t change the texture or appearance of fabric, so we have to use wooden boards instead. It’s surprisingly uncomfortable, but it’s a little trick we use to help create the illusion that we’re from another world.

It’s surprising I hadn’t realized this sooner, but it all makes perfect sense! Ghosts can’t interact with physical objects. They can’t move things – except for Trevor, who can move them very slowly – and they can pass through walls, but not floors. They also can’t cross certain boundaries unless they’re Pete. Because of this, when ghosts sit on furniture, they wouldn’t sink into it the way a living person would.

To create the effect of ghostly figures, furniture needs to appear solid and unyielding, even if it means sacrificing comfort. Stiff chairs, couches, and beds prevent the illusion from being broken – since ghosts have no weight, they wouldn’t cause any indentations or movement in soft materials. This ensures the furniture looks untouched, maintaining the ghostly aesthetic.

I’m a little confused about how ghosts can sit on furniture. If they can walk through walls, wouldn’t they just fall through chairs and beds? But, like I’m accepting the fact that they don’t fall through the floor, I’ll just go with this strange part of the ghost world.

It’s really interesting to learn how the show handles the physics of ghosts! I especially love the idea that they can get trapped in wells because they can’t float up, or get lost underground. The way people can physically walk through them and the impact that has on others is also a clever detail. The show Ghosts embraces these funny, physical limitations of being a ghost, and this behind-the-scenes fact really highlights that – it’s fantastic to see them lean into it.

Next time you’re watching Ghosts, whether it’s an older episode on Paramount+ or a new one from 2025, notice how the ghosts don’t affect the furniture. It’s simply too sturdy – and uncomfortable – to move!
