He’s a major movie star, and his popularity on streaming services proves it. Following the success of A Working Man, another one of his films is now becoming a hit on free streaming platforms.
The new shark thriller, released in 2023, is performing very well on Tubi. It launched on the streaming service with the first film, which came out in 2018. According to FlixPatrol, Meg 2: The Trench entered the top ten charts at number nine.
The monster movie was already popular on HBO Max in Ukraine, and it recently launched at number ten in South Africa.
The movie Meg (2018) was inspired by Steve Alten’s 1997 novel, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror, and the 2023 sequel drew from his 1999 book, The Trench. The films center around scientists facing a desperate fight for survival when a dangerous mining operation awakens massive prehistoric sharks, forcing them to escape and battle the creatures.
I was really excited to see Ben Wheatley direct the sequel – he’s a fantastic filmmaker! The script was a collaborative effort from the team behind the first movie – Jon and Erich Hoeber, plus Dean Georgaris. It was great to see Jason Statham back, of course, but also familiar faces like Sophia Cai, Page Kennedy, and Cliff Curtis. And they added some awesome new cast members too, including Wu Jing, Sergio Peris-Mencheta, and Skyler Samuels. It felt like a really solid mix of old and new!
While critics haven’t loved the Meg movies, the first film did well at the box office. The second installment, Meg 2: The Trench, received very negative reviews – only 27% approval on Rotten Tomatoes – but audiences seemed to enjoy it, giving it a 72% rating. According to The Numbers, the film made $398.5 million worldwide on a budget of $129 million.
Meg 2: The Trench Has a New Streaming Home
While critics weren’t always fans of the Meg movies, they were very popular with audiences in theaters and on streaming. Meg 2: The Trench is now available on Tubi as of December 1st, and will be added to Prime Video on January 1st. Good news for Jason Statham fans – the first Meg film is already available to stream on Prime Video.
