Stephen King’s First-Ever Adaptation Of Dystopian Thriller Sets Streaming Release Date In Time For The New Year

Stephen King’s novel The Long Walk is being adapted for the screen for the first time and will soon be available on a streaming service. Originally published under King’s pseudonym, Richard Bachman, the story follows a group of boys forced to compete in a brutal contest where only one can survive.

Starting January 10, 2026, you’ll be able to watch the Stephen King thriller, The Long Walk, on Starz. Until then, it’s still available to buy or rent online.

Although Stephen King wrote The Long Walk first, it wasn’t adapted into a movie until almost 50 years later. Several directors, including George A. Romero and Frank Darabont, tried and failed to bring it to the screen. The main difficulty was capturing the story’s slow rhythm and repetitive style.

Francis Lawrence, the director known for the Hunger Games films, ultimately brought the story to the big screen. The resulting adaptation was well-received by both critics and audiences, who praised it for its moving portrayal of brotherhood within a bleak, futuristic setting.

Performers Cooper Hoffman and David Jonsson received praise for their believable and touching friendship, especially knowing how the story ends. Despite many King adaptations coming out that year, The Long Walk was one of the most critically acclaimed. It currently boasts an 88% rating from critics and a strong 84% audience score.

I was so thrilled to see this movie really connect with audiences! It was one of only two films directed by King to actually become a hit in theaters. They only spent $20 million making it, but it went on to earn over $63 million worldwide – a fantastic result, and well deserved!

The Long Walk also stars Beng Wang, Charlie Plummer, Garrett Wareing, and Tut Nyuot. Jt Mollner wrote the script, and Lionsgate released the film.
