On Tuesday morning, former President Trump criticized Stephen Colbert after a rerun of The Late Show aired on CBS. He continued his history of criticizing network television, demanding CBS cancel Colbert’s show, even though it had already been canceled.
The comments followed a December 23rd rerun of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS. The original episode, which aired on December 8th, featured jokes in Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue about President Trump’s recent participation in the Kennedy Center Honors.

Shortly after midnight, the president used his Truth Social account to strongly criticize Stephen Colbert and the current state of late-night talk shows.
Donald Trump described Stephen Colbert as a failed comedian with no talent, claiming he’s only gotten worse since being let go by CBS and that his show has very low ratings.
Trump Calls on CBS to End Colbert’s Show Immediately
Shortly after, President Trump intensified his criticism, calling on CBS to do more to address the late-night show.
The president stated that Stephen is barely functioning and nearing his end, describing him as a “dead man walking.” He then shockingly suggested that CBS should “put him to sleep” immediately, claiming it would be a compassionate act.

Trump then expanded his criticism to include late-night shows on all the major television networks.
He questioned which late-night talk show host—on CBS, ABC, or NBC—was performing the worst, then claimed they all share three qualities: high pay, a lack of skill, and very poor viewership numbers.
The president has often complained that late-night TV shows are now too focused on politics and unfairly attack conservatives, and he made that point again in a recent post.

President Trump questioned why network news programs and late-night shows, which he claims are overwhelmingly negative towards him, the MAGA movement, and the Republican Party, shouldn’t lose their broadcast licenses. He then stated his belief that they should be terminated.
Minutes later, Trump punctuated the series of posts with a final message: “MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!”
The CBS Rerun That Sparked the Reaction
The incident that prompted a reaction from Trump involved a repeat broadcast of a show originally aired on December 8th, with Sigourney Weaver and Mandy Patinkin as guests. During the show, Stephen Colbert made fun of Trump’s appearance at the Kennedy Center Honors, which received negative reactions from the audience.

Colbert stated he generally agreed with the idea that the President shouldn’t also be responsible for managing military operations, suggesting it would be too time-consuming.
Colbert playfully poked fun at Trump’s remarks about being a host and his competition in late-night television, even making a joke about it at one point.
He admitted he wasn’t even trying to imitate Trump anymore, and bluntly stated he didn’t care if he lost his job over it, even saying, “Fire me!”
‘The Late Show’ Cancellation Already Announced
CBS revealed earlier this year that The Late Show with Stephen Colbert will end in May 2026. The network explained this was a business decision due to falling viewership and revenue in late-night television. Former President Trump publicly expressed his approval of the news, stating he was pleased Colbert was leaving the show.

Colbert responded days later on-air with a profanity-laced remark aimed directly at the president.
Even though the show has a planned finale, Trump recently indicated he wants it cancelled right away, instead of letting it finish its last season.
Renewed Debate Over Media Bias and Late-Night Television
This back-and-forth highlights the continuing conflict between President Trump and late-night comedy show hosts. For years, many of these hosts have regularly criticized Trump in their opening routines. Trump insists this isn’t humor, but evidence of unfair bias within the networks. The hosts, like Stephen Colbert, argue that poking fun at politicians is a key part of what they do.

Now that The Late Show is ending soon, Trump’s recent comments seem less like a call for quick fixes and more like another criticism of what he believes is a biased and unfair media landscape.
