Be warned, this contains spoilers for the season 1 finale of Pluribus. The creators of Pluribus have shared details about the research of Manousos Oviedo (Carlos Manuel-Vesga) that will be explored further in season 2. In the season 1 finale, Manousos finally arrives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and performs cruel experiments on Rick (Brenden Roberts), a member of the Others and their collective consciousness.
Vince Gilligan, the creator and showrunner, and the episode’s writers, Alison Tatlock and Gordon Smith, were questioned by The Hollywood Reporter about whether the experiment ultimately failed, or if Carol Sturka (played by Rhea Seehorn) stopped it before they could know the outcome.
According to showrunners Gilligan and Tatlock, and actor Smith, Manousos’s attempt to free Rick from the hive mind didn’t succeed, but it was a learning experience. Smith believes Manousos gained valuable knowledge from the failure, which will likely be helpful in the next season. You can find their full statements below.
Gilligan: That’s another good question. I don’t know. What do you guys think?
Tatlock: He fails in the moment while still learning something.
According to Smith, scientific experiments usually involve a lot of trial and error. The key is to learn from each failure – figuring out what didn’t work and what that tells you. This process of learning will hopefully be a major focus in the next season.
Researchers also wanted to know if the signal Manousos was using was the same one that originally caused the Pluribus virus. Gilligan, Tatlock, and Smith all confirmed it wasn’t. Manousos’ signal came from a shortwave radio, while the signal that created the hive mind originated from the planet Kepler-22b, which is 600 light-years away.
Look, I don’t want to give anything away about what’s coming next season, but I can say this: the signal we heard before? It’s definitely not the same one. It’s a whole new mystery, and honestly, I’m really excited about where they’re taking things. As a big fan, it’s thrilling to see them change things up!
We haven’t really considered it as a signal from outer space. Manousos’ signal is the one coming through on shortwave radio. The scientists in the beginning of the show were tracking something on a completely different frequency.
Tatlock: Different technology.
Smith: And way higher power. “They” had to broadcast it from Kepler-22b.
Okay, so this signal? It’s coming from a star 600 light-years away. Honestly, that makes it pretty clear it’s not the same signal we’ve been tracking. I mean, we don’t need to jump to conclusions and assume it’s the exact same one – it’s almost certainly something different.
Although Manousos wasn’t able to reverse the Joining, his work with the signal gave him valuable insight into the hive mind and its weaknesses. This knowledge will be crucial for making further discoveries in the upcoming season 2 of Pluribus.
I’m thrilled to hear we’re getting a second season – it was confirmed even before the first one dropped! It means we’ll definitely see what Manousos does next. Right now, he’s still down in Albuquerque, and things are complicated because he’s back with Carol after she uncovered some seriously unsettling truths about Zosia and those mysterious ‘Others’.
In addition to his existing knowledge, Manousos and Carol now possess an atomic bomb. This development fulfills a previous scene where Carol tested the Others’ willingness to satisfy her desires, and they shockingly confirmed they would even provide a weapon like an atomic bomb if she asked.
Manousos and Carol were kept apart for most of the first season of Pluribus, only reuniting in the finale. Season two will see them forced to collaborate, which will likely be difficult. Their clashing personalities and the drama surrounding how they first met suggest this won’t be easy, even after Carol shared her secret.
