Upcoming Show Based On Nobel-Winning Author’s Book Makes 1 Crucial Change To The OG Story

Netflix is adapting the classic novel by Nobel Prize winner John Steinbeck, and they’re making one small change to the original story. Steinbeck is considered one of the greatest American authors, having won numerous prestigious awards including the Nobel Prize, the Pulitzer Prize, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

His stories often criticized capitalism and highlighted the lives of working-class Americans. He’s most famous for novels like The Grapes of Wrath and Of Mice and Men, which are commonly taught in high school English classes.

Let me tell you, Steinbeck’s East of Eden is truly his masterpiece – the book he felt destined to write, and the one he considered his most important work. And now, it’s finally coming to television! What’s really exciting is that they’ve made a change to the story that, in my opinion, is going to make it even better than the original.

Netflix Is Adapting East Of Eden By John Steinbeck

Netflix is creating a seven-part miniseries based on East of Eden. The story spans three generations and follows two families – the Trasks and the Hamiltons – in California’s Salinas Valley. The Hamiltons’ experiences are based on the author’s own family history, while the Trasks’ story is a fictional reimagining of the biblical tales of Adam and Eve, and Cain and Abel.

This story was first adapted into a film in 1955, directed by Elia Kazan and featuring James Dean. Now, Netflix is creating a seven-episode miniseries that carries on the Kazan family’s artistic tradition. Elia Kazan’s granddaughter, Zoe Kazan, is writing and executive producing the series, and will lead the creative direction alongside Jeb Stuart.

Netflix’s East Of Eden Will Focus On Cathy Ames’ Perspective

The announcement for the new limited series on Tudum revealed a change from the original book. The book is told from the perspective of a character named John Steinbeck, who has a life very similar to the author’s own. The Netflix series, however, will not follow this same approach.

The article shared that the upcoming adaptation of East of Eden will center on the Trask family’s story, focusing on the compelling character of Cathy Ames, who will be portrayed by Florence Pugh. This tells us two important things about the project.

The series will now be told from Cathy’s point of view, shifting away from John’s. It will primarily center on the Trask family, rather than giving equal attention to both the Trasks and the Hamiltons. Ciarán Hinds will play Samuel Hamilton, which is a good choice since his character is important at the beginning of the story. However, the rest of the Hamilton family won’t appear in the cast.

The Singular POV Will Help Improve An East Of Eden Book Complaint

Switching the point of view in the story is a great improvement, as it addresses a long-standing criticism of John Steinbeck’s East of Eden. Since the book came out, both critics and readers have noted that the tone feels uneven throughout.

John’s storytelling is inconsistent. He sometimes refers to himself as “I” and other times as “John.” He also switches between knowing everything about what all the characters are thinking and feeling, and simply telling the story from his own point of view.

This can be confusing because Steinbeck isn’t a member of the Trask family. As an outside observer within the story, he can’t access their inner thoughts or understand their reasons for acting as they do. He simply doesn’t have the close, personal connection needed to truly know them.

Additionally, John Steinbeck frequently pauses the narrative to analyze and offer his own thoughts on what just happened. These unusual choices can sometimes pull you away from the compelling story of the Trask family.

Having Cathy Ames narrate the story feels more natural because she’s connected to the Trask family and understands the characters deeply. It also offers a clear, focused perspective.

I doubt the show will have a narrator throughout, but if they do use narration for the Netflix adaptation of East of Eden, it would make the most sense for her to do it. Since it’s her family’s story, it feels natural for her to provide commentary or share her insights. As a family member, she’d have a unique understanding of what the other characters were thinking and why they acted the way they did.

Overall, this approach makes more sense. It also avoids unnecessary questions about the author’s role in the story – like who he is as a character, whether his depiction of himself is accurate, and why he’s narrating. Simplifying this will help keep the story focused.
